Right - so for anyone lamenting our lack of salary cap space, they should note that we could be $36 million under too... if we cut most of our team.
The difference between the Patriots and the Jets is that we don't WANT to cut most of our team - they do.
I'll take that any day of the week.
And consider this - if Wilfork were a free agent playing for another team and we signed him on the first day of free agency to a long term contract, would people be pleased?
Because once Cassel is traded that's probably exactly what's going to happen.
According to Tom Marino if these players are cut or left to go FA we free up $16,647,000, not including a Cassel trade.
Harrison, Rodney DB 14 3,732,500 Colvin, Rosevelt LB 9 1,932,500 Wright, Mike DE 3 1,422,500 Gaffney, Jabar WR 6 1,282,000 Sanders, James DS 3 1,026,000 O'Neal, Deltha DC 8 1,000,000 Hochstein, Russ OG 7 890,000 Paxton, Lonie LS 8 884,000 Evans, Heath RB 7 856,000 Jordan, LaMont RB 7 850,000 Hanson, Chris PT 7 761,500 Izzo, Larry LB 12 490,000 Sanders, Lewis DC 8 489,500 Williams, Tank DB 6 276,500 Smith, Kenny DT 5 274,000 Seau, Junior LB 18 250,000 Stokes, Barry OT 9 230,000
I love Rodney(a very hard loss) and Hochstein has been a help. Can we upgrade Wright although he played well? Heath will take a deal to return. Paxton might be a tough loss unless we can get him under his due CAP. Who pays a million for a LS?
Other than that, let's get the CAP space settled and when the dust clears resign some of them if available. Leave about $4m for these guys above to resign them, With Cassel that is about $30m under. Miguel you can check these figures.
I would take a meeting with Boden, McAllister, Fred Taylor and Sean Jones. These are lower tier players but still have enough to offer. Oshansky might be an upgrade on Wright. Should be fairly cheap.
The shocker here is I look at McAllister as a Safety and backup CB..
Now if what King is saying about Peppers is true, our 2009 FA was just fine thank you.
The gaping hole would be WR, BUT if you pick up these guys, you can adjust your draft. Michael Clayton might be a steal at WR. Great rookie year then went down hill. 6' 4" and 215. Still had 38 grabs last year and over 12 YPC. He is only 26.
Going out a little more expensive, there is a great CB in Bartell but what would he cost? OT Stacy Andrews was tagged last year but got a knee. Could he be cheap and be ready for 2009 season?
