Pats have second-lowest spending limit

I guess that we can stop all the nonsense that the Pats are the only ones who know how to operate in the cap era.

You're being serious about this statement? We're under without NEEDING to cut anyone. I doubt cutting Coles was something they were just itching to do.

At any rate, the cap space will be a lot better shortly.

Jets cut most of their team and now are $36 million under the limit.

Right - so for anyone lamenting our lack of salary cap space, they should note that we could be $36 million under too... if we cut most of our team.

The difference between the Patriots and the Jets is that we don't WANT to cut most of our team - they do.

I'll take that any day of the week.

And consider this - if Wilfork were a free agent playing for another team and we signed him on the first day of free agency to a long term contract, would people be pleased?

Because once Cassel is traded that's probably exactly what's going to happen.

I was being dead serious.

Given the role Faulk plays on this offense, I'd probably cry if he gets cut.
He's done a terrific job, that's for sure, and has cured his fumble-itis.

I don't want to see him cut, either, but I think if you are looking to cut $4mil, then i'd rather see him cut than Jarvis Green.

I hope this is yet another example of joking.

You surely CANNOT think that the more cap space you have the better cap manager you are?

It is about who you have on your roster for the money you are spending, not about how little you are spending.

Faulk is the best pass blocking back in the league, with Brady comming off of his injury, Faulk becomes even more important then he has been.

I am just saying the Pats are human, not extraterrestrials who have figured out the way to master the cap. They are good but so are most teams these days.

$3.2M makes things pretty tight.

Right, but you don't believe the Cassel development was expected, I assume. Aside this very unique situation, this team would be very comfortably under the cap right now.

Sounds like should of could of would of... They know what they are doing, it was a gamble to franchise Cassel. They were willing risk losing out on initial free agent signings to get some sort of value for Cassel. In the meantime they sit on their hands.

As it sits they have $3.2 left to spend on 15+ rosters spots and camp bodies. Once Cassel is traded they will have $18~ which is ok but not great.

According to Tom Marino if these players are cut or left to go FA we free up $16,647,000, not including a Cassel trade.

Harrison, Rodney DB 14 3,732,500 Colvin, Rosevelt LB 9 1,932,500 Wright, Mike DE 3 1,422,500 Gaffney, Jabar WR 6 1,282,000 Sanders, James DS 3 1,026,000 O'Neal, Deltha DC 8 1,000,000 Hochstein, Russ OG 7 890,000 Paxton, Lonie LS 8 884,000 Evans, Heath RB 7 856,000 Jordan, LaMont RB 7 850,000 Hanson, Chris PT 7 761,500 Izzo, Larry LB 12 490,000 Sanders, Lewis DC 8 489,500 Williams, Tank DB 6 276,500 Smith, Kenny DT 5 274,000 Seau, Junior LB 18 250,000 Stokes, Barry OT 9 230,000

I love Rodney(a very hard loss) and Hochstein has been a help. Can we upgrade Wright although he played well? Heath will take a deal to return. Paxton might be a tough loss unless we can get him under his due CAP. Who pays a million for a LS?

Other than that, let's get the CAP space settled and when the dust clears resign some of them if available. Leave about $4m for these guys above to resign them, With Cassel that is about $30m under. Miguel you can check these figures.

I would take a meeting with Boden, McAllister, Fred Taylor and Sean Jones. These are lower tier players but still have enough to offer. Oshansky might be an upgrade on Wright. Should be fairly cheap.
The shocker here is I look at McAllister as a Safety and backup CB..
Now if what King is saying about Peppers is true, our 2009 FA was just fine thank you.

The gaping hole would be WR, BUT if you pick up these guys, you can adjust your draft. Michael Clayton might be a steal at WR. Great rookie year then went down hill. 6' 4" and 215. Still had 38 grabs last year and over 12 YPC. He is only 26.

Going out a little more expensive, there is a great CB in Bartell but what would he cost? OT Stacy Andrews was tagged last year but got a knee. Could he be cheap and be ready for 2009 season?

This makes no sense. The numbers calculated right now (~3M) are for the 2009 league year. No matter how you slice it, Rodney, Hochstein, and the other UFAs aren't included in the 2009 numbers. So I can't possibly understand how letting UFAs walk can be considered "freeing up up to $16M cap room." Letting UFAs walk will free up exactly $0.00 in cap room, leaving the Pats at, you guessed it, ~$3M in cap room.

If you haven't noticed, all of the players listed are UFAs. You can't "cut" them. All of those figures listed are the players' 2008 cap hits, which counted against the 2008 cap. This is now 2009.

If Cassel is traded that's ~$17M in cap space, not including any possible compensation. But if you use Miguel's number of ~$8M (Schefter has ~$3M), then the Cassel-less figure is ~$22M.

How did Philly get that far under the cap?!?!?

see Eaglescap.com
$18 million in LTBE credits combined with little dead money as well as Runyan's and Dawkins contracts expiring and you get $38 million in space....
