there should still be a cap on how much you can give a rookie. 10 million + a year is ridiculous for a rookie and hurts the bottom 10 of the nfl.

look at jamarcus russel of the raiders, and alex smith of the 49ers.

Its fairly clear that he's talking from an AGENT point of view and not a team point of view. He totally disregards any signing bonus that these players got when they signed on the dotted lines.

Its the top 15-20 players in the draft that a pay scale would be geared toward, numbnuts.

Yes, the section on the rookie wage scale is misleading. "Except for that, Mrs Lincoln, I thought the play was really good."

Noone would ask for a rookie scale if the progression of cheap salaries beyond the first round didn't skyrocket at the top, to the extent that on some teams their rookie pick is their most highly paid player.

I really don't think the skewed pay scale is that unfair. Well it is if you look at from a purely dollar for performance scale. But there is more that goes into it to it than that. Use for example Brett Farve going to the Jets, he may not have performed on the field up to the pay he recieved from the Jets but the Jets were able to use Brett Farve for marketing and to help sell club seats and the like.

Those guys at the top of the draft are not just expected to perform on the field but they are pretty much immediately used to market the team especially the top 5 guys. If their name is being used to benifit the team in such a manor are they not entitled to some of the profits there? The marketing is obviously based on the persumed ability of the player but a few years down the line if the player busts the team still has had some benifit from the guy because of the marketing.

Someone even in the second half of the first round does not carry the same cache.

Note: The pay in the first few slots may still be high even considering this but I think it something overlooked when people talk about the high pay to the top 10 players.
