Which player has had a better year - Wes Welker in 2007 or Troy Brown in 2001?

Troy had an awesome year in 2001 but how does it compare to the 2007 performance Wes Welker is having in place of Troy's familiar position?

Who has had a better year (in Welkers case,so far since its not over yet)

I would have to say Troy, Welker gets to be a complimentary weapon to Moss. OTOH TB was the main weapon in 2001 which featured a short passing game due to limitations of the OL and Brady's inexperience.

BTW I do not want to take anything away from Welker. I was happy with the trade when it was made and he has exceeded my expectations.

Well argued. Their production is similar, but Troy achieved his under more difficult circumstances.

And I don't recall him dropping ANYTHING in his prime.

I agree with PF13. Troy was the ONLY guy, Welker is surrounded by other weapons. Brady in his first year starting vs Brady in his 7th year.

It all adds up to Troy IMO. That is definitly not a knock on Welker I think he is awesome.

I have to go with Troy. Wes is having a pretty good year, but in 2001 Troy was special.

Won a title in '01 with Brown. He's an all-time Patriot. Love Welker. But he's got alot more help. And a MUCH, much better Brady.

Welker should have somewhat better numbers as a wide receiver. The overall production basically evens out when you take into account the punt return (Troy's rushing is about equal to Welker's rushing + KR) numbers, but Troy did it with a lesser QB (Brady is a much better QB today) and with lesser complimentary weapons.

But we don't love Troy for racking up huge WR numbers, do we?

Troy was the receiving corps in '01. Thanks to him Brady survived.

Troy Brown in 2001. He had an awesome year, one of the very best seasons by a Pats player in the Belichick era. It's right up there with all of Brady's great seasons, Ty Law in 2003, Tedy Bruschi in 2004, Corey Dillon in 2004, Richard Seymour in 2003, Asante Samuel in 2006.

It's also premature to compare Welker's season to Brown's anyway, as the season has yet to be completed. Brown had special plays in huge games down the strech.

Brown had three punt return touchdowns in 2001, including a huge one in the AFC championship. Then take into account he had the big play on the game winning SB drive.

Yup gotta go with Troy for now.
He had over 100 catches and nearly 1200 yards receiving.
He WAS the Patriots receiving corps.
He also had key special teams returns, and practically won us the Pittsburgh game in 2001.

Troy Brown in his prime is a hard measuring stick for Welker to be compared to.

I think Troy was more important to the team but Welker so far has made as many great plays as Troy did in 2001
