Doc says Brady faces 2-month recovery
By Lenny Megliola and Herald wire services
Wednesday, February 8, 2006 - Updated: 02:13 AM EST

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady should expect a recovery period of 6-8 weeks following his impending hernia surgery.

“There are two procedures that can be done to alleviate the pain in the crease between Brady’s leg and body,†said L. Douglas Dolgov, sports medicine physician at MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham.

One involves a three-inch incision in which a mesh is inserted that protects content from pushing through the abdomen.

“It’s like patching a hole in the wall,†Dolgov said.

The other procedure involves less cutting, with three small holes made in the groin area.

“Brady will walk away more quickly, more comfortably from this procedure, but he’s still not going to play football for six weeks,†Dolgov said.

I've had both of these procedures. The first is old school, they cut right through the abdominal muscle tissue. This is more painful and recovery is longer, and can be quite long if the muscle is particularly thick (the muscle itself takes a long time to heal). I had this done on my left side.

The second method is performed laparoscopically: 2 holes for instruments, 1 hole for the laparoscope (a small camera). All 3 holes are incised vertically below the naval. Mesh netting can be used in either procedure, but I only had mine on the right side.

The 1st operation had me laid up for well over 2 months, but the second was great since cutting was minimal. I felt great in a month. I'd imagine they will elect for this method.

Thanks for sharing my pain.

Not to overstate it, but it's no wonder Brady struggled with his accuracy.. Brady in particular is very dependant on his mechanics and he's often stated that his arm can only be as strong as his legs allow him to be. He had a bum knee and this upper leg hernia which probably hurt not only his legwork, but his follow through on his delivery.. I hope he gets all fixed up for next season.

ps: those injuries plus the chronic shoulder deal... brady is falling apart!

That's about the same as they said about McNabb after Week 1 when he got hurt. And, yeah, it fully explains Brady's lack of sharpness.

wow

could someone please explain to me how this guy isn't the MVP! Well who cares i guess, all he wants are more lombardi's and who am i to argue
