Troy Brown Equals Pure Class

A great team player and an incredible retirement speech. Troy Brown is the type of sports star you want children to idolize.

Thought I would mention it....My brother's dog is named Troy

Ugh, I'm feeling very emotional about this. I really feel privileged to have watched Troy contribute so much to the Patriots. I can't say that anyone did any more.

A very good player and a very good man. A role model of perserverance that we can all emulate.

If I ever see Troy in a restaurant or bar, he will NOT be paying his own tab.

I felt bad for his children for crying then he was almost crying.

Man, it just seems so surreal that he is retiring....I have been watching him play so long, and one of Brady's favorite targets when he took over from Bledsoe. Troy was so money man it was off the chart.

I hate saying this kinda stuff cause most times it is cheesy and over the top but when my kids grow up and I am watching 'old' DVD's of how good the Patriots were, I will mention to them my favorite Patriot player. Troy exemplifies exactly the kind of attitude and work ethic I want my kids to have.

Troy felt a little embarassed in the presser mentioning the word 'can't' with his children present, well he shouldn't have. All he ever did was perform. He is a perfect example for his kids and mine.

Out of any patriot player that ever wore that uniform, Troy is #1, hands down.

Pure class....

Thank you Troy, our Mr Bingo man, you were without doubt the best! Thanks for being that rare athlete that could be completely admired on and off the field.

The only Pats jersey I've ever worn! #80 will be a constant reminder of what the best can be on the football field.

I thought this was really telling to who the man truly is. He didn't want to say the word can't in front of his kids. Can I change my screen name to Sign Troy's Kids, could be one heck of a WR someday.

hmmm how about 10-15 years from now we have Brady's Son throwing passes to Browns kid with Stephen Belichick the head coach.

I can't let this thread slide into page 2 and beyond without at least adding a couple of thoughts.

Troy was drafted in 1993, the year after I moved from Dorchester to Dallas. He is now retiring after 15 seasons. Sometimes it seems longer than that since I left; other times it seems like last year. As Herald columnist Joe Fitzgerald might say: Time, you are a thief.

Kudos to Big Bill for recognizing the value in Troy, but couldn't he have better-utilized him as a pass-catcher during those 4 seasons? Was it Parcells himself or someone else who said that if Troy had not been injured before SB31, he would likely have prevented Desmond Howard from scoring a TD on that fateful KO return? Hason Graham was in Troy's spot on the coverage team, and Howard ran right past him on his way to the EZ.

No kudos at all to Little Bill for not activating Troy for the SB That Shall Not Be Named. Bad, bad karma. Troy also should've been activated for the final regular-season game at the Meadowlands, so he could've caught a TD pass which would've broken the donkeys' record of most TD scorers by one team in one season.

Two of the most clutch catches I have ever seen from a Patriot were made by Troy: in 1996, on the last game of the regular season, at the Meadowlands, vs. the jints, during the 4th quarter, on his backside; and in SB38, during the championship-winning drive, on 1st/20, after a bogus OPI call against Troy himself, amoung at least 2 defenders, twisting his body as he's catching the ball. Unreal.

And finally, if I could teach a youngster how to behave as a professional WR in the NFL, I would have him watch all the video that I could find on Troy Brown. Concentration, crisp routes, sure hands, no wasted motion, no wasted time and no wasted breath on meaningless, ego-gratifying posing and trash-talking. He is the anti-Mohammed Ali: he respected the game, his teammates and his opponents, with a smile through which shined the content of his character.

Thank you for everything, Troy. You have given us more than we have given you. Let no man ever wear #80 for the New England Patriots again.

P.S.: Could this appreciation thread be stickied at least until the 49ers' game? We could use the reminder of what a real Patriot looks like.

Nice post. In retrospect, activating #80 for the SB could have made a difference, even if just in terms of karma, as you say. In fairness though, that was never a very realistic option at the time considering the players we had available to play that game.

Troy Brown was on the team for 15 years during that time the Pats went to 5 Super Bowls he was active for 3 and we won the 3 he was active for and lost the other two. Things that make you go hmmmmm. I hope this is a sign of things.

The real shame about Troy was that it took so long for him to get a real chance to play. I remember wanting Pete Caroll to play him more, but it wasn't until the rest of the team melted down in '99 for him to get the playing time he deserved. Imagine the numbers he could have posted if he had a chance earlier. One of my favorite moments was his celebration after the punt return TD in the championship game when he just wiggled his shoulders really quickly, it was the coolest celebration ever because he let the world know he was too cool to do one of those elaborate dances even though he could if he wanted to. My eighty year old father thought it was really cool too, and he hates the dancing! I still remember him making play after in play in the '01 season, something I think people don't give him enough credit for-great catches-turning potential five yard losses into crucial first downs, plays where he escaped defenders like he was houdini. He's always been a favorite of our family!
