Even if rookie receiver Chris Harper didn’t muff a punt return last Sunday against Denver, he might have still been waived to make room for free-agent receiver Damaris Johnson. That was one of the behind-the-scenes details I learned about that situation, as Johnson was already traveling to New England before the Patriots’ game Sunday night. Also, the Patriots insisted on a two-year deal with Johnson, figuring that if things click, he’ll add another layer of depth into 2016.

Another view of Rob Gronkowski and his complaint with officiating

Headline is not about this section, obviously because it's Reese's pieces d%#*!@t, no matter what BSPN says!

Read Reiss's whole piece- lots of interesting stuff in it!

Did Harper make it back to the practice squad?

He had as of last week. I haven't read of his being dropped but I'm not studious about this kind of thing either.

Lots of interesting stuff in that article, but the part that is the focus of this thread is certainly interesting. I was thinking the Pats wanted Damaris more as a returner, but it seems like he may factor in as a receiver too.

It's kind of funny, actually - this is essentially the second receiver that BB is picking up off of BOB's scrap heap this year. The first one stepped in right away and contributed. Would be pretty cool if the second could too.

So we got that going for us.

Which is nice.

I find it interesting that this article emphasized how much we wanted him yet

WR Damaris Johnson happy to answer Patriots' call

says he was cut before the season started and this is the 4th team he's tried out for since.

Hope he does work out for us, lord knows we need some talent at WR.

It is interesting that he's signed for next year too.

That maybe his agent answered the phone first from four others or organized his schedule of tryouts with four others first, does not truly give any firm evidence to contradict the claim the Pats wanted him.

Doesnt matter, they signed him. Well see.

Says he returns kicks, WHAT ABOUT PUNTS????

The crux of the article, to me was, Johnson was already traveling to Foxboro before Harper muffed the punt and they signed him 2 years.

There are different degrees of "want".

IMO, I think that when the Pats decided they needed another WR, they wanted to try their in-house talent (Harper) first. After a week and a half or so, they decided he probably wasn't ready for the pros yet and called their first choice in FA which was Johnson. Obviously they couldn't get him game ready in like 2 days so they had to use Harper for the Denver game before waiving him a day later to sign Johnson. The muffed punt was just a coincidence in all of this.

There's also the system factor. Other teams might've liked him but didn't want to invest a roster spot on him while he took a few weeks to learn their system. Not as much of an issue here since he spent time with BOB.

thoroughly unsuprised, they arent going to anger cut him, he is practice squad guy

This is what pisses me off so much about Skippy as a play-caller: they run Damarius Johnson
on a jet sweep in the 1st quarter for a nice gain, THEN NEVER GO BACK TO IT AGAIN! WHY???
Damn you and your arrogance, Skippy.
