Pats prep for Minny’s tough run defense

http://boston.metro.us/metro/sports...s_prep_for_Minnys_tough_run_defense/5327.html

The challenge begins with the offensive line, which must figure out a way to contain Pat Williams and Kevin Williams up the middle. Even more difficult will be doing that man-up, since Minnesota’s linebackers blitz often enough to negate most thoughts of double-teaming the plus-sized tackles.
-----
The complications continue for the Pats, who must focus on squaring off the edge of the line, where cornerback Antoine Winfield – 41 tackles, three for a loss and the target of Belichick’s praises – will be doing business.
“Winfield is probably one of the best run [defense] corners in the league,†Belichick said. “He makes a lot of plays. If you run to his side, a lot of his plays are for negative yardage.â€

Might actually be a game where NEM's play action will work.

But, willwe see it? I wouldn't hold my breath. If I see McDaniels continually try to penetrate that defensive front, and get nothing out of it, but keep trying, I will blow a gasket.
OK, Josh, you have your instructions. Continually try to penetrate that defensive front, and get nothing out of it, but keep trying.

I'm really questioning just how tough their run d is. If you look at their schedule, the only decent back they have faced is McGahee and he would be better off with a line of construction barrels in front of him doing the blocking.

But think of all the innocents covered with NEM stuff when the gasket blows? It might even reach as far as Bakersfield.

Right, they faced Portis but he was 10-39 when not really healthy. I expect a solid running game from us on Monday. Not dominant but solid.

I think with us playing on that turf, Maroney's speed is going to be much more useful than Dillon's power.

Not to mention the two big boys that Minnesota has up the middle. I, too, would love to see Kool Aid getting to the outside and creating some big plays.

I'm more inclined to think this is the kind of game where Dillon will be pounding that defense, wearing them down, then maybe Maroney gets some opportunities in the second half. Of course the reverse of that is running stretch plays and such to run the legs off the DTs.

I think you'll see both in both halves. Also, this O line has performed well against big four man fronts in recent years ( excluding, achem, the broncos). I think we work in some more screens, some draws, and passing game should start to help out the run a little more.

Wouldn't hurt to have Graham out there this week either....

Agreed on Graham. The TE plays a huge part in the Patriots blocking schemes.

Sounds like the Patriots are definitely going to have to establish the passing game early. If the Vikings are blitz happy with their LBs, that should open up quick slants to the TEs and perhaps some draws and screens.

Agreed. We're going to be very aggressive with the pass on the first series. Expect a downfield play to stretch the D.

I would look for sweeps and some alot of slants...but then again remember we have "skippy the kid" as out OC.

I've heard of him, his team hasn't had a losing season with him at the helm.

Not sure how serious you are but these snipes as McDaniels are way off base. He's executing the gameplan the Belichick wants. You know, that HC who is going to the Hall of Fame and whose feet we would kiss if we could ?

Anyone who thinks that Belichick doesn't know, approve and have siginificant input into the gameplan is nuts. The playcalls for given situations, downs and distances will have been thought of and discussed during the week. The playcalls from previous weeks discussed to a fault.

Make no mistake, McDaniels is executing Belichick's gameplan just as Brady is executing McDaniels' calls. Anyone who has a problem with the overall design and concept of the offensive gameplan (or defensive for that matter) should complain about Belichick. Believe it, he's running the show on both sides of the ball.

"All covered with NEMstuff,
Wading through the streets of Bakersfield."

That was actually how Buck Owens originally wrote the verse.
