Patrick Chung injury

I remember young Chung as an often out of position player who also picked up stupid penalties. He was always aggressive and likeable, but it took him a while to learn.

So if this injury occured in week 2 or 3, would he have been out for the season? IR?
The fact that he needed surgery would mean IR, at least to me. I doubt either Chung or the Pats would want to rule out a return to the team by week 17 if they didn't have to.

I'm just glad this happened in the last game if it happened at all, so that he would have plenty of time to recover and no temptation to do something stupid like return early or do some kind of bodge job surgery that got him back on the field at the expense of his health. Injured athletes are very vunlerable to being pressured into making very bad medical decisions when the season is live, glad that the timing renders it a nonissue this time.

They also played a lot of cover 2 at the time, Chung back there paired with either Meriwether/Sanders/Ihedibo/Sergio Brown. Definitely not putting him in position to succeed, and Belichick admitted as much later.

I was wondering whether others noticed the parallels between Chung (yesterday) and Rodney (2003-season Super Bowl):
  • defensive backs (safeties, in fact)
  • break right arm in second half of Super Bowl
  • Pats go on to win
  • return to sidelines at the end with arm in cast
  • red white and blue confetti
Check out the photos!

I was thinking of rodney too, breaking his arm and standing on the sidelines.
