Note: I am not making the argument that this Patriots team is a Super Bowl cailber team, but the fact remains that, looking back, every championship team had a disgusting loss somewhere along the line:
2007 -- GB 35 NYG 13 -- A week 2 loss against a team that, at the time, wasn't quite held up to the standards of a potential NFC 2 seed.
2006 -- Jax 44 Ind 17 -- Divisional foe runs roughshod over their opponents, who look completely and utterly lost, especially on run D... sounds a tad familiar...
2005 -- Ind 26 Pit 7 -- A potential wild card team shows they can't possibly hang with the big boys in the postseason...
2004 -- Mia 29 NE 28 -- This '08 Dolphins team MIGHT pick up 5-6 wins this year, especially if Ronnie Brown remains fully healthy. That '04 Dolphins team was 2-12 at the time, and beat a wretched Cleveland team to get its 4th win...
2003 -- Buf 31 NE 0 -- Lawyer Milloy, etc...
2002 -- Pit 17 TB 7 -- An egg laid at home on MNF by a team still battling for the 1 seed in the NFC
2001 -- Mia 30 NE 10 -- We know the details of this one...
2000 -- Pit 9 Bal 6 -- The culmination of a three game losing streak where the Ravens scored a total of 15 points...
You have to go back to the 99 Rams before finding a team without a truly "yuck" loss...
Again, this clearly doesn't book the 2008 Patriots a February flight to Tampa, but there is quite a precedent for the "egg" among recent Super Bowl champs... let's see what Week 5 in San Francisco brings before jumping off the cliff...
