August 19, 2015 - What we learned: Cam, Panthers' offense in big trouble

So much trouble that they lead the league in scoring...

A few excerpts:

Benjamin's torn ACL is a devastating personal moment for the second-year receiver, and it puts the onus on Newton to carry a slow, imbalanced offense. The offensive line is shaky and the running game is led by a talented eight-year veteran, Jonathan Stewart, who has topped 200 carries once in his career. Newton is going to have a hard time finding open receivers, aside from stalwart tight end Greg Olsen.

The situation would feel less dire if the Panthers had an effective offensive coordinator. They have Mike Shula. As an inveterate Cam Newton believer, I wonder if the Carolina offense needs to bottom out in order to get rid of Shula before finding a coach that gives Newton a real chance to grow. It could happen this year, especially if Stewart can't stay healthy.​

In fairness, Olsen has been their most consistent target, and Cam's completion percentage has been below 60% this year.

Also, Rosenthal wasn't the only one beating up on the Panthers' O this off-season. But just shows you how meaningless predictions from experts are.

That was pretty much consensus at the beginning of the year. Cam really has done it with a rag tag group of WRs. Pretty much like the Pats horrible 2006 group except Olsen is better than anything we had that year.

To be fair I too thought that an already mediocre Carolina offense would drop to below average once Kelvin Benjamin was lost for the season - and I had never been the least bit impressed with Mike Shula.

Look at it this way: at that time did any one envision the Panthers being even a top-ten scoring offense, never mind number one in the league?

Sure, predictions have no effect on an outcome and are therefore meaningless - but does that mean that nobody should make any, or offer an opinion? Absolutely nobody saw this coming.

Six years ago, Stewart was my binky of binkies and wished NE could swindle a deal for the guy....but Carolina was in the habit of overpaying multiple RBs and since then, Stewart never had that breakout season I thought he was capable of. Fast forward to this year....nice numbers but the best you can say about Stewart is he is very steady......not elite....but reliable. For a team that is perceived to be a run first team, Stewart has 4 carries over 20 yds. He gets the hard yards and Newton takes most of the glory near the goal line.....go figure
For the highest scoring team in the league, would you start any of their pass catchers over NE starters. Maybe now...but certainly not early in the season. Newton has elevated the group......seems clear to me.

That's why I keep it in my sig. People don't see it that way now, but at the time, BB got killed for taking McCourty and Gronkowski in 2010.
