NFL eyes 17th game to grow revenue, shorten preseason

No way the league goes with everyone having a bye at the same time. Need to keep pumping out the product every Sunday on TV.

But two byes might fly you add one more week of TV revenue without adding any games.

Correct me if I am wrong but haven't they done that in the past before????

Maybe they could offset the byeweek for 2 or 4 teams by 1 week and have those games be the ONLY games played that week. Kind of like a reverse bye-week.

Even if they go with staggered bye weeks, I still like the 6x6x6 schedule as it pertains to inter-conference games, then intra-conference games, then finally intra-divisional games.... putting a very high importance on those last 6 games and keeping the teams playing to win.

I don't know if you could have staggered byes and a 6x6x6 schedule. But I think they should have a policy that the last two weeks of the season is divisional games only. That by itself should eliminate most situations were teams are resting starters.

The problem I have with this idea that it will "grow revenue" for teams is that most teams are already charging full price for tickets to pre-season games. They are also charging full price for parking and everything else. So, where is the extra revenue going to be generated from?

I think some of the owners are silly enough to think that the

players will play 17 games for 16 games pay.

TV money and ad money.

TV stations and advertisers will pay significantly more for a regular season game than a preseason game.

Actually the way it is set up now the players recieve a percentage of revenues...if a 17 game schedule generated more revenue than the players would see that as well. I think it is safe to assume an extra regular season game would generate more revenue.

With the TV contracts set through 2011 and 2012, the only ones seeing more ad money would be the TV Stations themselves. At least until the new contracts with the TV corporations were signed.

I doubt the 17th game would be added till around that time anyway...especially if you figure they would be giving it away for free.

TV for one.

And unlike the Pats many stadiums don't sell out on season ticket holders so, seats go unsold.

Even in Foxboro many ticket holders don't show up and although the team gets money for the seat, they don't make money on parking, beer, food, etc.

Funny thing is the NFL has taken down the story from it's own web site. Makes me think they don't want to consider it now - or perhaps save it as a bargaining chip in the CBA negotiations.

My instinct is that anything Goodell supports is a mistake. Yes, he's that much of a doofus.

The reason we know that opting out of the CBA early was good for the game is that Doofus opposed the idea.
