I can't think of any team they faced so far this year (unless the Bills mixed a little in?).

I've seen other qb's and OLinemen struggle when facing a 3-4 after dealing exclusively with 4-3 schemes. I'd have to think thats an advantage every time for the Pats, but just how much of one?

Johnson must have played against it some over the years. How much experience does Childress & co have gameplanning for it?

I can see this being a factor in the success of the defense, particularly in stuffing the running game. Thats my best hope of surviving a close contest..

Childress was the Eagle's Offensive Coordinator for SB 39. The Eagles play the Steelers in preseason each year and have played them during the 15 win regular season - you know, the one the Pats whipped their butts in the AFCC before wrestling with Carolina?

As for 3-4 clubs this season, none.

Minnesota lost at home to Pitt in week 15 last year 18-3. They beat Cleveland 24-12 last year at home in week 12.

Thatw as last year. this year is a totally new year with new players

None in reg season this year. A couple during preseason.

If Seymour does not play and the Pats continue the 3-4 I think they will struggle against the run, but at least maybe Rodney can cheat up with the wr's nicked up.

Brad Johnson is the same QB. Bryant McKinnie is the same LT. Marcus Johnson is the same RT. Of the new players, LG Steve Hutchinson played Pitt's 3-4 in the SB. RG Artis Hicks played for Philly and has experience against the Dallas 3-4 and the Pitt 3-4. FB Tony Richardson played for KC against SD's 3-4 for years. RB Chester Taylor played for Baltimore against Pitt for years, and practiced against his own teams 3-4. Brad Childress coached against Pitt and NE in the preseason every year, and despite being fooled with a 2-5, prepped for the Pats 3-4 for SB 39.

They played for other teams Richardson, etc. So chemistry is different than last year. Hutchinson is a huge upgrade, just ask Shaun Alexander.

You can't compare last year with this year. Coaching is different, schemes are different. And that left side is huge.

Yes, you can. The QB, the RT, the LT have all played together for two years, and the Center is a 4 time all-pro.

Be prepared
The Vikings have yet to play a regular-season game against a team with a 3-4 defense, although coach Brad Childress said the team benefited from an exhibition schedule that included several teams that play the alignment, such as Pittsburgh and Dallas. Childress added that while the Patriots play a 3-4 base defense, the Vikings are preparing for various possibilities, which he learned the hard way in 2004 when serving as the Eagles' offensive coordinator.
"We spent two weeks preparing before the Super Bowl for a 3-4 defense, and they didn't play a 3-4 defense in the Super Bowl," Childress said. "They played an even front with guys in both 'A' gaps, so you have to be ready for anything. That's what makes them difficult to prepare for."

I don't really care if the Vikings played 3-4 teams last year. It's not a matter of understanding what they're facing, it's making the immediate reaction in a split second. Not having faced much 3-4 is an advantage to us. It won't win the game by itself but it's an advantage.

Reminder from another thread : The Vikings offense is bad. Tied for 18/19 in points and 28 of the 120 have been scored defensively. And now they're without Marcus Robinson. Even at home they've only scored 58 points in 3 games - by comparison we've scored 90 points in 3 road games - and before you point out that they played Chicago at home, they also played Carolina who is average in points allowed and Detroit who blows defensively.

I'm arguing that the Viking are vastly improved and I don't think a 3-4 defense will confuse them. If anything I think they will give the linebackers a big run for their money.

If anything the Vikings struggle in the redzone and end up kicking field goals. I see this as a huge advantage for the pats and the pats are one of the top teams in red zone efficiency.

I couldn't agree more on both points.

Agreed. If teams like the Colts have trouble, with their OL, facing 3-4 schemes 2-3 times a year, I can't imagine an offensive line getting up to speed in less than a week, especially an opponent they rarely see.

Best case,I hope and expect the 3-4 to help minimize Seymours absence rather than emphasize it.

To date, the Vikings have lucked out, playing teams at the right time. (Seattle losing / missing QB & RB, Carolina without Smith, etc), so lets see how they do with a fairly healthy Pats team. I think they will be exposed.
