Maroney throws college coach under the bus

Moments later, another reporter led off his question with, "You know how loud the Metrodome can get ... "

Smiling, Maroney interrupted and said, "No. Not really. It didn't get too loud for us."

You see this is part of the problem for a football program like Minnesota. They don't have the tradition, therefore they don't have the boosters or the money flowing into the program, so in turn they have to play in a multi-use facilty that's geared for the professional games, not college football. The good news for Minnesota is that the state legislature has recently approved a new college football- only stadium for the Gophers.

The U. of Minnesota's conference is a killer. They will always be grouped with the likes of Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Iowa, Purdue, etc. It doesn't help matters that Minnesota isn't really a football state anyways. A turnaround can be done though. The Iowa Hawkeyes were never really much of a program until Ferentz has made a career there. It will take a long time to turn the Minnesota Gophers into a real contender no doubt. Whether Glenn Mason is the man to do it is a question I can't answer.

The shinning armour dimms a little.

Sorry Laurence, those are thoughts you should keep to yourself and
not to a mircophone stuffed in your face.

Damnit, somebody call Kinko's. For some reason page 341 from Book II (aka The Red Book, aka Corpus Medius) was missing in Maroney's copy.

Eh, not sure what the big deal is. Sounds like more he was boosting up his other buddies (wide receivers) he still has on the team than he is slamming the coach.

And for all we know he could be telling the truth. Lots of college coaches lock into one mode of thinking and stick to it. Or they don't play younger guys and stick with vets, or what have you. Lots of them are flawed, can't fault LM for speaking his mind.

Non-issue imo.

It's difficult to tolerate bad coaching when you've seen the best.

Methinks Maroney is just a little inexperienced/immature and didn't realize just how those comments could come across. I'm guessing he's called and, to some degree, apologized.

we hear this in sports all the time "he threw him under the bus"

where does that expression come from? Has anyone seen somebody actually throw someone under a bus?

"I don't think they need a new coach," he said. "I just think he needs to open his eyes and look at his team." (Quoted from article)

Yeah Maroney criticizes his former coach but it's not like he says the guy should get fired. So I think the title here is misleading.

Interesting sidenote is that Maroney is going to have a homecoming game on Monday night. I think we should expect some fireworks. I think he's gonna be pumped and jacked to play before his family not to mention its on national tv.

I'm only worried that his 'crowd noise' comment could rile up some of the locals, but it was about the Gophers' fans (but I guess a lot will be in the dome Monday night).

No, but I've seen Bettis run over a few folks on his own...

Throwing the coach under the bus is a little strong. He said the coach didn't recognize all the talent he had. Whoop di doo.

The expression originated in Pittsburgh where Jerome Bettis used to sneak up behind teammates and start dry-humping them.

:rocker:

:ditto: He's a young man with not yet 1yr's experience in the big leagues, offering his opinion on his old team. How does his comment on the emphasis of the running game to the underutilization of the passing game constitute "throwing his coach under the bus"? Especially as he prefaced it by saying he didn't agree with those at the school that were looking to replace his old coach? Exaggeration via the media once again.

Not true, you've forgotten Hayden Fry. He made Iowa a perennial bowl team.

Oh irony! I guess folks need to rent Steve Martin's Roxanne for the context, but good grief, Lawrence puts his tongue into his cheek and laughs off the Metrodome's noice levels for the reporter. The kid is saying it doesn't matter oh interpreters of doom.

You still have to play the game - maybe Lawrence bouncing off tackle and scooting for a couple big gains will quiet things for the Pats - I know a 10-14 point Pat lead will accomplish that too. As for throwing his coach under the bus - bus exhaust, he just said Minnesota had a good coach who could benefit from stretching the field with his receivers. La de da.

My mistake.

Who knows, this is as good as any other explanation.....

Read the same interview at Patriots.com and the star tribune piece seems to be a bit malicious, at times it even pretends to know what Maroney is feeling - "he sometimes felt the same way during his three years with the gophers" (in being under utilized). Seems as if we are not alone in New England when it comes to shoddy journalism. Maroney just got "thrown under the bus".
