Looking back, PFW articles after Milloy released

Why would an owner mess with one of the most important things? Team chemistry is the one element that takes the “I” out of team. Does the owner really think the guys are going to rally around that San Diego safety?

Shame, Shame, Shame. That is all I can say about the cutting of Lawyer Milloy. The object for this team is to improve itself and get to the Super Bowl. I think this team weakened its chances and blames the salary cap for its woes. I think using that as an excuse is a slap in the face to Patriots fans. There were many other ways to make this work without eliminating one of the most important players on the defensive side of the ball. I would like to know how the writers at PFW view this. Especially considering the timing and what it does to the team's psyche and on the field. Shame, Shame, Shame.

Good stuff.

Pro Football Weekly's take

Here is another one. Here was my favorite part:

My biggest question is this: Why not cut players in an area of strength? Maybe LB Tedy Bruschi or WR David Patten could have been released? Both those spots are deep, and neither guy is a Pro Bowl player — Bruschi isn't even a starter. Now, I don't know the figures exactly, but Bruschi and Patten and maybe another lesser guy might have added up to $5.8 million in salary-cap space. I'm sure there had to be some other alternative to putting Milloy out there. If either of the projected starting safeties were to be cut, I'd have expected Harrison, not Milloy, to be the one. What about RB Antowain Smith? He'd have been my first option to release before Milloy. At least then you're cutting a player who was far less productive last season and is not a team leader by any means.
