Jarvis Green wins 2006 Ron Burton Community Service Award

Green wins award

Defensive lineman Jarvis Green has been selected as the recipient of the 2006 New England Patriots Ron Burton Community Service Award. Green will be honored tonight at the team's Kickoff Gala.

"I am very proud to have an award that recognizes and rewards community service," owner Robert Kraft said in a statement. "Philanthropy is very important to my family and we are proud of all the charitable contributions made by our players. Ron Burton was a Patriots pioneer who committed his life to giving back to his community. He set a great example for all others to follow and I am glad that so many of our players continue that tradition today."

Green, 27, is a Louisiana native who has committed his time to several Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. He has consistently ranked among the Patriots players who attend the most team-sponsored charitable events each season.

Tip o' the cap to Jarvis Green. I like to root for guys that are good people and not just good players. Tim Wakefield is another one of those quiet types that don't seek out the fanfare for their charitible endeavors, unlike certain another starting pitcher.

Kudos to Green. I remember Ron Burton and it is an honor to receive that award. More of a real life personal honor than SuperBowl MVP.
