Makes you wonder if Judon is "Holding In"... showing up for camp, but not doing much else...

He made an immediate impact on the team, is one of the best, if not the best, defensive players on the team... Hes a team Captain, tirelessly pimps for the team in social media, makes plays, basically leaves it all on the field...

so, per Jerrys article, he might be looking for a contract adjustment...

Instead of a bump, I would actually like the team to step up and give him an extension... hes 31 now... one deal left, really, for him... he needs to finish out as a Patriot... 3 or 4 years (hes under contract for next year as well so a 4 year deal would be like 3)... not sure what dollars he might be looking for though, not going to offer a suggested dollar value, considering how off i was in free agency...

.

He's severely underpaid. Even though he takes December off, he deserves a bump.

He played today from what I heard. All drills.
He's signed through 2024, when he'll be 33. They could add a year or two, but I think they'll have to give him a bit more money this year and next to seal it. Compared to some of the more recent edge contracts, he's WAY underpaid. The true hit of the 2021 FA class.

Add some attainable incentives. Keep him happy. He's worth every penny to this young team.

good to know that he's practicing...

He’s got two more years left of his deal, if he was going to grouse over money and an extension… it would be next season, not this one.

This is likely agent talk. A LOT of reporters have developed mutually beneficial relationships with the media. PFT's Florio has one of the largest since is an ex-lawyer. That is where he gets a lot of his stuff. For the agents this a NECESSARY tactic in order to put pressure on teams and to "control the narrative".

As for Judon, who is now 30, this is his last shot at improving his financial value. Do you give him more money? I'm not sure. The argument against it would be that

1. he's already under contract for this year next with very LITTLE guaranteed money or dead money consequence.

2. He's 30 and his production seems already to fade as December rolls around the last 2 season, though last year was better than his first. He played about 2/3rds of the snaps last year and really needs to play less (imho) in order to improve his effectiveness for the most important time of the year. So in a sense, ideally he wants you to pay him more to play less.

3. He signed the deal in good faith. He's gotten all the up front money in what I remember was a front loaded deal. It was a fair market deal at the time. The Pats paid the premium of a first day signee and set it up so he wouldn't be a cap killer in his final years of the deal. You signed it, Matthew, live up to it.

The argument to give him more would be:

1. He has over produced based on the CURRENT market for quality edge rushers. and the current contract makes him a bargain.

2. He's been a team leader and completely bought into the "patriot way", the culture" and the NE community. He's a leader and an important part of the locker room culture. He's made himself into one of the "faces" of the team and the franchise.

3. He is more than just a pass rusher. He is a guy who can "set the edge" in the running game and plays a LOT of snaps.

The reality (or what should they do?)

1- He's a very good but not great rusher. Like a 1B kind of guy. Most of the metrics I've seem put him the lower end of the top 12-15

2. I don't see him as "holding in". They now have 2 years of data and are probably trying to manage his snaps so he goes longer into the season playing at a high level He doesn't need to be there grinding every practice. He's earned "vet days off" But lets see.

3. What I would do. I'd give him SOMETHING to show you want him happy. Maybe not new money but more of it guaranteed. Currently he got a 10MM dollar deal with about $2MM guaranteed THIS year and nothing guaranteed next year. If there is any new money I'd make it into incentives. Something like a Million for 3 or more Sacks in over the last 4 games of the season. Others would be for games played and TEAM success . Nothing big because you don't want to start setting precedents. You know you can't do this for Judon and NOT do something for Guy. Which I would also do. But you can see how this could spread. "why not me?

So it would look something like this He signs a 3 year extension with the same $10mm base plus another 2 in incentive. Instead of just 2 MM guaranteed, you move it to $6MM for this year and next with the same incentive package for 2024. The key to this now is that you give him a signing bonus of say $8MM and the last year would be a phoney baloney year to spread the signing bonus so that it's around $3MM/yr.

Bottom line - He gets some upfront money that he would have gotten anyway and a couple of million extra in incentives which you may or may not have to pay, but you'll be happy to do so because it would mean he's been an effective player and the team is doing well. But basically the same money

he same $10MM base, but maybe

4. You also have to remember that edge rushers usually DON'T age well, and "cliffs" for them are real

Sign the beast

Holding in.

Judon is fearful that gas may be a solid?

Playing with a rib injury would have even had Lawrence Taylor taking time off.. judon played with one. Last season he was a force all season.. guys an elite player in the league. Pay em bill!!!

Knowing how our team does business.. I can definitely think that. BB & groh are weighing who do we pay. Onwenu, judon, uche or Dugger. IMO.. I believe judon gets a bump for the upcoming season..

I too want them to extend him. He's been an absolute force for us.. we haven't had enough elite player on the roster since 2019. Without him our defense is severely impacted!

I'd normally agree with you... Considering that we are pondering an addition at RB, I think they will hold pat (pun intended ) on him this year.. we will have more financial flexibility next year... That's honestly how I see this playing out

I understand what you're thinking.. but we have done things before.. like with gilly when he was going through the same thing.. IMO I forsee a bump up for now.. as players get to the other side of 30 .. they tend to decline..

Curran mentioned they have ample cap space this year and of course next. According to groh the cap can be manufactured any way a team wants. So we need to take care of our own guys if we are to attract outside FAs going forward.

The philosophy they've been able to use past 2 decades isn't going to work in the 2020s..

I want judon here just like you. He's such an important part to the team. Just feels like Dugger is thier priority to me. Again just IMO

This is a joke, right?

How would that work? “Hey Bill, I’m here but I want more money so I’m just going through the motions a little and not doing any real work”? And Bill just smiles and answers “Okey dokey anything you say”?

or maybe Bill answers ”Judon, get in there and rush Mac!” “Nah, I’m holding in, taking today off”. Yeah, sure.

holding it in is what whoever first came up with that turd of a phrase should’ve done.

more likely the team is lightening his load now so he’s fresher late in the season. He’s shown what he will do when games count. No need to see what he’s got or have him learn how to play at a high level. Meaningless preseason snaps against teammates are much less important to him than late season plays against opponents.

I believe due to the 50k daily fines players would face for not showing up to mandatory camp. The theme now has to been to show up but be a limited participant. Now I heard something about judon had tweaked something and the team didn't want to put to much on him so early in camp. However it's a clever strategy, and he should be entitled to a bump up.. a wise man once said.. pay attention to what people do.. not what they say...

They seem to be going more specialist than every-down, but some like Von Miller and Justin Houston were certainly worth it.

reporting to camp, so you dont get fined... but not doing much else, its been done before... not saying hes doing it, just a thought

Giily, ty law, Seymour, Mankins.. just to name a few patriots greats that have done it before...

I’m not a cap expert…I don’t know all the ramifications…but IMO they should make his 2023 salary guaranteed (all 10m if that’s what it is) which won’t require a salary bump and add 2m in incentives for 2024.

Cap isn't complicated at all.. teams maneuver the salary cap anyway they want. Fact of the matter Is we need to sign our own players! If we don't .. we can forget about obtaining premier FAs..

The team can very seamlessly bump up judon, Guy. That's nothing. I'm sure Dugger will get Done soon or during the season. Uche if he has another double digit sac season.. HE GONE. Onwenu will likely get tagged IMO
