Without looking at it in any detail I would have assumed that they have drafted DL very high in almost every draft. Not really the case.

They certainly have made investments but most of the impact players are 2nd or 3rd rounders.

National Football League: NFL Draft History - by Team

2011 - 2nd round, pick #53, Marvin Austin (DT)
2010 - 1st round, pick #15 - Jason Pierre-Paul, DE
2010 - 2nd round, pick 46 - Linval Joseph, DT
2008 Free Agent - Chris Canty
2007 - 3rd round, pick #81 - Jay Alford - DT
2006 - 1st round, pick #32 - Mathias Kiwanuka - DE
2006 - 4th round, pick #124, Barry Cofield - DT
2005 - 3rd round, pick #74 - Justin Tuck - DE
2003 - 1st round, pick #25 - William Joseph - DT
2003 - 2nd round, pick #56 - Osi Umenyiora - DE

1993 - 2nd round, pick #40 - Michael Strahan, DE

Some themes
- a lot of picks
- mostly DEs in rounds 2-3
- all picks could have been taken by the Patriots except for Jason Pierre-Paul

If Marvin Austin were on the Pats, everyone would be calling that a wasted pick since he's on IR for his entire rookie season...

If you look at all the DL we have drafted in the first four rounds since 2003, I think it tells a huge story.

Clearly BB must change his drafting strategy of the past 5-7 years and start drafting pass rushers and DL early.
