Meyer gets "year's worth of insight from his day" with PATs.
Says he will implement a lot of it with the Gators.

This is another good article on the Belichick - Meyer relationship.
PATs had 5 Gators at the Blade this offseason.
Belichick coached a few of them before the draft.
Will see how Gators do under direction of Urban Meyer.

Belichick still manages to have very good college sources(Meyer, Ferentz and Hill)
even though Saban connection is gone. His success, in part, is due to the
contacts he has.

(Meyer spelling corrected --- thanks Handel )

Re: Gators copying Patriots - Myers' insight

But Belichick visited UF in March to visit the football program. Wearing a Hawaiian-style shirt, baggy brown pants and loafers without socks, Belichick ran several former Gators through drills. He spent much of his time working with Mincey, Brown and Herring, tutoring them on footwork and throwing passes to test their ball skills.

Sounds like Belichick may be going for the Jimmy Buffet look this season.

BTW . . . great read.

It's "Meyer"

Re: Gators copying Patriots - Myers' insight

Nice article, thanks for posting it JR.

It looks to me that Meyer wants to make the bigs.

What better way to do that than to be seen cozying with
coach Bill?!
Theres no shortage of teams looking for BB clones.

Am I being arrogant?

I predict he'll be in the NFL for the 2007 season.
Especially if Pats win SB.

"He's right down the middle," Meyer said. "All football. There's not a whole lot of other stuff going on. It's not, 'Let's get a cup of coffee,' and then talk about how the Yankees are doing."

Now why would BB want to talk about the Yankees?

Mincey

What I picked up on was that Belichick was running Mincey through drills during the offseason. He clearly spent quality time learning first hand, how he takes coaching, how we performs drills... whatever success criteria he has for a young DE/OLB. Drafting him in on Day Two seems like a random thing, but clearly a lot of work went into it.

More and more, I'm becoming convinced that Belichick finds players that he likes, and then decides where he's going to draft them. I dont think he casts his net very wide-- there may be a dozen players that he really wants in any draft class, and if he misses out on them, he trades down.

And Weis, who may turn out to the best connection of all.

I think this is definitely true (although a dozen may be too small a number). I remember reading (in Patriots Reign?) about how much Belichick felt he learned from Jimmy Johnson about drafting. And that's the central JJ philosophy on drafting: target guys you want, be realistic about where you can get them, and then trade up and down as needed to make it happen (and stockpile picks when possible).

Let's not forget the great hometown connection: O'Brien at Boston College! :rocker:

And Al Groh runs the defense that is most similiar to Belichick's in college football.
