I'm not sure we will franchise Welker today. We have two full weeks to use the tag, and there is no penalty for waiting until the deadline. I think they will try to negotiate with him first, and will only use the tag if they can't get a long term deal worked out.

Watch though, with my track record, he'll get tagged by the end of the day!

The Pats typically wait until towards the end of the franchise period to franchise a player. I don't see this year being any different.

The Packers also may wait on Finley to try to get a deal done because he has already indicated that if he is franchised as a TE that he would file a grievance to get his tender changed to a WR because that is how the Packers use him.

I don't see why any team would use the tag early as it generally doesn't sit well and makes negotiations more difficult. Hopefully the Patriots can get the Welker deal done without the tag but if it comes down to it they should absolutely tag him.
