Dr Z analysis

Yeah, William Gay sure played well at defensive back in that last game.

Except William Gay was a defensive end who retired nearly 20 years ago.

Z's gone senile.

If he starts dressing up Brooklyn Decker in Linda Harrison's cavewoman suit, I'll give him a pass for his "William Gay" comment.

And you could talk about tiring the LT, that's great, except on the strip sack at the end of the game, Green was lined up on the center/RG.

Bill's advice to the Giants against the Bills in their Superbowl, was let Thurman Thomas run all day, and even get over 100 yards. That guarantees a win for the Giants, he vowed. And it did. Kelly don't run the quick run and shoot.

He did the same to the Colts and the results were the same. If not for several egregious Ref errors, the score might have been 24-7 or 24-10 or thereabouts.

The other thing obvious was that the small quick Colts Defense, would and did wear down over time against the bigger, talented, and almost as fast Patriots. By the mid third quarter, they were freely substituting for their tiny D line, trying to give them a blow. But they were worn out. The pass rush was gone; the run Defense was no longer stopping the Run very effectively, either.

The longer the game would go on, it showed, the more lopsided it would get.

In fairness to Dungey, he tried. The Colts just are not good enough, like the rest of the league, it seems to stop this edition of the Patriots.

:rocker:

Z misses a lot of details, and his overall analysis is not so good, but I do think he's one of the few sportswriters that understands what "play for 60 minutes" really is all about. He's got a good feel for the heavyweight bout nature to big football games between competitive teams. And he's right ... by the end of that game, the Colts were beaten down, and the Patriots were in command.

The Addai thing reminds me of Belichick's explanation on how he'd defense the option if anyone ever tried running it in the pros: (paraphrasing) "Go ahead and run it. We'll just pound the quarterback every play, see how long he lasts."

Belichick knew Addai couldn't keep up the pounding, and the Colts wouldn't be able to jump to a big enough lead with him running it to put it out of reach. Except for that one completely blown play on the long TD, the Patriots plan for Addai was perfect and should've resulted in a more comfortable win than it turned out being. If the Colts O and Pats D play the same style in Foxboro, the Pats win by 17.
