Adam Schefter reported on NFL total acces that brady is right on pace. Put this to bed, he's right more often than these other folks, just like I was sad when I heard him report that brady was out for 2008, I am happy to hear that he is doing great for 2009.

If I understand what has been posted by others, the CBA has a clause that say's you can only franchise someone that is projected to be a starter in the next season. .

It does NOT. The poster who said so later read the CBA and posted that such a clause does NOT exist.

Thanks, that's good news. Not that I am/was too concerned but Shefter has a strong, though not perfect, track record.

I don't see the value in the Patriots planting a false story on Brady's injury.

It does not drive up Cassel's value to another team in the case of tag and trade. Those teams are going to assess what value he brings to their team. Patriots needing him or not needing him doesn't change that. And teams are smart enough to know if Brady is not coming back next year Cassel won't be on the market in a tag and trade.

Although I am not sure they did, there are a number of reasons why they would do it.

Maybe they are expecting a challenge from Cassel and they wanted to at least let people think it is legit that he is being franchised to be the starting QB.

Maybe they expect so much demand for Cassel that they figure that if they take the stance that they may need him next year that one team will get stupid and offer the Pats a sweetheart deal to pry him away. If a team is actually willing to part with two first rounders, the Pats can then spin it that they will take their chances with O'Connell because the deal is too good, but they really need Cassel.

There is no real downside of floating this rumor if untrue. The upside could be significant though if there is a team or two desperate to get Cassel. It is like the draft where rumors about players get floated around (somebosy's injury is worse than advertised, someone busted for pot, etc.). It only takes one team to fall for it to work.

Last night's WBZ TV 11PM news top story -- of the entire newscast, not the sports -- was a rehash of the "Brady is behind schedule" story with zero details and no new information (even though they teased it as if it was new).

That tells me that it's almost a certainty the Patriots are planting these stories. I am just surprised Reiss hasn't chimed in yet.
