BB Contract.....

"rediculos?"

Is this a Patritos board?

Man, I was going to let this die. As I've said, I fully expect BB to stay. I'm mostly piqued that so many people treat this reasonable question as an outrageous thing to even discuss, as if we were demanding a public analysis of a Tom Brady sperm sample. But...

Hold on...go back and look at the quote of mine you highlighted. I believe that in your eagerness to scoff at me you've answered precisely the opposite of the question I asked. For good derision, you need precision.

Huh...I was under the impression that the coach's yes/no contract status for 2008 was public knowledge for every other team in the entire league. Which is what makes this situation stand out. Am I wrong?

Most of them become public knowledge for a reason. Spin. Whose the best, whose getting paid the most, who has a meaningless vote of confidence, etc. Cowher was under contract through 2008, yet he's off to work for a network. The contract doesn't really mean anything other than the team has a right to limit your opportunities within the NFL to them or someone who will compensate them for you.

I think Borges revealed a while ago that Bill's contract is basically a series of ongoing options. I think that is the problem - his deal doesn't fit the mold because it is infinite and not finite. It's just another sign that this is in fact a partnership that once having achieved success will continue as long as it is mutually beneficial, and either party is free to end it whenever it ceases to be. It's the same deal with Pioli who can essentially leave here any time he wants for a simple title change. This approach just flies in the face of so much of what the NFL is built up around (money and ego) that some will never understand or appreciate or just freakin' accept it. It truly is what it is. Ditto for the QB.

How can anyone think that BB, with his strong sense of history, would walk away from the situation he has right now?

This is the guy who brought in Flutie to try ther last drop kick extra point ever.

This is the guy who brought in Testaverde to extend the consecutive seasons with a TD record to a level where it may stay for decades.

BB has an accute sense of history, and he knows that this Patriots team may eclipse the Steelers as the best dynasty ever.

You'd better believe that he gets a kick out of the NFL intro sequences where they show BB, Lombardi and Walsh as the coaching trinity.

BB isn't going anywhere until the run is over.

100 years from now they'll still be telling stories about BB and his Patriots (enhanced by decades of baseless exaggeration), and that's just the way he wants it.

i agree with you 100% re belichick's professional motivation and i agree 95% with your final conclusion. (in the unlikely event that you haven't read Halberstam's biography, you will enjoy it and should do so).

the only surd in the equation is whether or not belichick might be worth so much to a franchise with a subpar valuation and on the field performance that it might be economically rational for an owner to put a seemingly ridiculous sum of money on the table, a sum that it would not be economically rational for Kraft to match and which might be too great for even bb to turn down.

Interesting info, thanks! That certainly would make sense, and clear up the "peculiarity" altogether.

Just for the record, PC, I like you, I invariably like your posts, and want you to know this is not at all personal. The subject matter is just inane. That's why it gets me off.

Thank you kindly, and the respect is mutual (even if I did get a little testy there!)

FWIW, I don't think the Pats' aggressive reloading is a signal that BB is leaving. More likely to be a signal that he's pissed. That's two years in a row somebody else hoisted HIS trophy! Hrrumph!

Further, I'm pretty confident that they do these contracts on a handshake basis. Kraft says to BB, "Tell us what you want, and I'll have my people do this with your people. Then we'll get it finalized over lunch at the Cafe Escadrille (or some such place)."

Cafe Escadrille? I think it's more likely they'll go to the Ground Round.

Look, I'm not losing any sleep over this. I fully expect BB to stay. I didn't even start the thread. I just think the whole thing's a little peculiar.

Secrecy is not a virtue unto itself. It's only valuable insofar as it gives you a competitive advantage which outweighs any negative consequences. So far, nobody has been able to suggest any advantage whatsoever to keeping BB's contract status a secret...if he's actually under contract beyond 2007. The "public contractual brouhaha" only comes into play if he's not under contract. Which is why reasonable people suspect that he's not. Which wouldn't mean the sky is falling, but would be interesting, no? Surely a fair topic for discussion, just as we'd discuss the contract status of a player.

I don't think so. If it was revealed he had a ten year contract inevitably the Rong Boregas 's would create speculation like there was with HOF Coach Paul Brown.

Has he lost it? Has the game passed him by? And this media speculation was for the guy the TEAM was named for !!! brown had to create his own team a decade later, and go to a Super bowl to prove the asses wrong !

If Bill wants it private, it' s none of your business !

I started this thread. I just wanted to get exactly what has been written, other peoples thoughts on the issue.

Thanks guys!!!

I heard Pete Prisco on WEEI this morning and he mentioned that he heard this about BB's contract situation:

"It has something to do with his divorce and the team was waiting till the final paperwork was filed so that the new contract would be all his."

Just what I heard.

Well supposedly the divorce was final last summer. Ah well, I just want a Patritos' SB win in 11 months for now.

Gawd, here we go again. Is it the puritan stigma of the New England region where anytime anything good happens, it will be balanced out by something bad? Another "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" syndrome. Even Jonathan Edwards would find this amusing.

This is a great time to be a Pats fan. Similar to the early 70s with the Bruins and the 60s and 80s with the Celts. No one knows how long this will last; yet, if we focus on what is completely out of our control and don't remind ourselves that this is a special time as a Pats fan, we end up missing the essence of what's really happening.

Another way to understand this is to contrast this time with what other fans may be feeling about their teams. Think of it this way: You're a Raiders fan . . .

I'm not being negative!!!

I just asked a question.

I'm a season tix holder and I'm enjoying this time fully!!!!
