it's awesome watching how fans from other countries are loving america and funny how they're lecturing our own media. this has already been a glorious success. on to the knockout round.

I don't follow soccer but have been paying more and more attention over the years.

Does the USA have a chance to win?

Short answer: almost none.

It does have a large number of players who play in the top four European leagues (Italy, Spain, Germany, England) but, when you ask how many are regular starters for Champions League clubs the contrast is sharp.

Depending how you slice it, Spain, France, Germany, England, the Netherlands, Portugal have 8-11 regular Champions League starters in their starting XIs. Add in Brazil and Argentina who each have "only" 5 or 6 regular Champions League players but have very strong domestic leagues.

The USA, by contrast, has 2-4, which puts them on a level with Norway, Japan, Switzerland, Sweden, Morocco, South Korea. It's really unlikely that a World Cup winner will come from outside the top 8 national teams by the measure of Champions League starters -- and, if that does happen, then there are several other challengers.

That said, the USA is definitely punching above its weight. Well done, Poch!

Thanks. That's what I thought.

It’s getting tough over here in Europe to pay any attention.

Englands 4-team mashup is at 11pm (23:00 German time).
Columbia-Portugal group at 01:30am & Austria-Argentina group at 04:00am. (Sunday)

I’ll just wake up to see the brackets fleshed out. Maybe try and catch first half of England live. Hope they either go all mad-Max or roll over and play dead so I don’t feel guilty falling asleep at 45min (+6. ).

Scored tickets to the round of 32 at Gillette on Monday. Last game I will go to in person this World Cup as the next Gillette game is when I have a work event and I'm not traveling for any games (unless some Finals tickets fall in my lap at like 5% current retail price)

Well, after watching most of CAN v RSA; I would have to say that if I wasn’t completely ignorant about soccer…I would opine that although both teams were endearing; Canada sucks, but SAf sucks more. Canada, get ready to be thrashed by Netherlands-it won’t be pretty.

But I don’t know soccer, so just pretend I didn’t say that.

[edit: Oh, and almost forgot.: CONGRATS northern-Neighbor! ]

Hey congrats, going to the Germany game. I think they win easy.

It won’t be quite the party the Scots had, but should be good folks there. Just remember when they say they don’t speak English, that every German under age of 55 had at least 8 years of English in school. so if you press on talking in English, they will end up finishing your sentences for you if you talk too slowly ( to help them out). LOL.

Played a fortunate opponent and (eventually) found the net. I’m pretty pleased they didn’t need penalties.

Sure, Morocco or the Netherlands will likely roll next week. But moving to the round of 16 is a phenomenal success. Doubly so when you consider how little the one truly elite player has played so far…

I’m not ready to concede defeat.
Far tougher opponents await, but as they say “that’s why they play the games”!
