for those that don't remember (or care, that works too) CB Emmanuel Forbes was taken by washington with the 16th pick of the 2023 draft, one spot before we grabbed Gonzo at 17... he was released by the 'skins, picked up by the rams who declined his option

looks like we dodged a bullet with that one...

other guys in the 23 draft who have had their options declined: QB Anthony Richardson (IND), DB Deonte Banks (NYG), OL Broderick Jones (PIT), LB Jack Campbell (DET). EDGE Tyree Wilson (NOR), DT Mazi Smith (NYJ). DE Felix Anudike-Uzomah (KC)

discuss, or not, as you will

Thought he played well last year for LAR but yeah colossal mistake for WASH taking him over Gonzo.

made no sense... glad they effed it up

if they did take gonzo, maybe we take WR JSN?
In general I think teams put too much emphasis on certain personality traits. As with Caleb Lomu who is considered perhaps too nice for an OL and not nasty enough, Gonzalez seems perhaps too cool a customer for a CB. But we're had success with players like Gilmore in the past, another guy who was considered very nice.

Amazing how much performance affects the option. Zay flowers was pick between Quentin Johnston and Jordan Addison but will make $9M more than each of them.

Is he better than Prunty?

If he is, sign the beast?

It might be a good hedge against Gonzo being gone-zo after his rookie contract…

He's not a FA till next offseason.

I have a quick question, You list 8 players who had their options declined. Does that mean there have been 24, whose 5th year options have been picked up or have there been others not done that you haven't listed. 24 options picked up seems like a lot to me. I thought the number was usually closer to 50% declines on average than the 25% you have listed here. So have there really been 24 options been picked up from the 2023 draft class? And is this about average or was the 2023 class an anomaly?

Looking at OverTheCap.com, the 2023 players who had their options declined were:

  • Richardson [IND 4]
  • Wilson [NO 7]
  • Jones [PIT 14]
  • McDonald [JEST 15]
  • Forbes [LAR 16]
  • Campbell [DET 18]
  • Banks [NYG 24]
  • Smith [JEST 26]
  • Murphy [CIN 28]
  • Anudike-Uzomah [KC 31]
That's 10/31 [MIA lost their pick that year]. In 2022 it was 11/32.

23 have been picked up iirc ... think there's still one that hasn't been announced... its better than 2022, but don't know the overall % of fifth year options that are picked up year by year...

just thought this was kinda cool ... two cbs taken back to back, one picked up, one not... ymmv
