Grading the 2019 Patriots: Not much went right with personnel moves, but Patriots season still a success | Boston Sports Journal

A lot of disagreements with this.

They extended Chung through 2020 before the 2018 season and then through 2021 this last season (2019.). That seems pretty insane for a guy who will be 33 next season, and I’m guessing this extension is more about restructuring than committing to him through age 35. So 3-year extension is inaccurate.

If the trade for Sanu is not the biggest FAIL possible, it’s hard to take this seriously. There needs to be one more column on right called “Horrendously Bad, Incomprehensible Moves” with just Sanu on it. At least with AB there was the possibility of success.

Demaryius Thomas signing wasn’t as big a fail as trading him, if we are going with hindsight, which this chart is based on.

I would still put Gordon as a mixed bag. Considering the ridiculous price tag on receivers, just getting a few good games out of him at that salary is arguably worth the cheap contract.

Jason McCourty played 10 games at a very high level (may have gotten pro bowl consideration) before injuring his groin. Mixed bag...not like they paid him him elite CB money...still a good deal overall for price/production.

Jamie Collins is so goddamned overrated. I loved this guy as a draft pick and during his first few years, but he has so many holes in his game. I would call it a Solid move considering the low price tag. In reality, though, $3M is probably closer to his actual worth than $12M or whatever the Browns were paying him. Great start...a lot of that the result of Gilmore’s gang and terrible QBs, and Collins having easy lanes for sacks and turnovers handed to him. He tailed off like Winovich, proving much of it was scheme.

Dorsett solid? That’s a stretch, even at that bargain price.

Newhouse was not a mixed bag. That must be a joke. How can you be more of a FAIL than that?

Meyers not necessarily a great move. Bar is so low at WR...this should be a TBD or maybe solid. Only a Great move if we are basing this on his preseason play. Might be Kenbrell Thompkins 2.0.

Seems that releasing Allen was not such a Solid move. Renegotiating/extending last year would have been better. His absence really hurt, huge downgrade in short yardage blocking with LaCrock.

Watson was a terrible signing considering the need at the position. Mixed bag would have been awesome. He was so bad he initially couldn’t even get on the roster at TE with Izzo and LaCosse ahead of him on depth chart. How else can you define bad?

Roster spot for Gunner, everyone’s favorite underdog who is not a very good punt returner but only does punt returns, is TBD at absolute best. How does this decision get a Solid rating when they cut D. Thomas to make room for him? One of the worst decisions of the year in hindsight.
