Chargers great Keith Lincoln dies at 80

The reason that Lincoln's death is of note to me was because it was the first of many dagger in my heart, great performances against hometown teams.

For those that are old enough to remember, an unbelievable performance in a championship game against our Patriots.

At once both a thing of beauty and an absolute horror to behold, just...damn what a game he had. Twenty touches and over 300 yds of offense. You aren't the only one that still has the scars

For those who don’t remember that far back, in the 1963 AFL championship game, the "moose of the Palouse," accounted for a then NFL regular and postseason record (now just a postseason record) of 329 yards of yards from scrimmage (206 yards rushing on 13 carries, 123 yards receiving) as the Chargers routed the Boston Patriots 51-10.

In both 1963 and 1964 he was the AFL All-Star Game Most Valuable Player.

It remains more understandable why those of us who followed the Patriots from that beginning era are so much more appreciative of today's Pats than your everyday run-of-the-mill fan!

This era was well before football (US) was covered across the pond but it is good to see on this board tributes to great players from other teams. RIP

This was a super interesting post, both for content and aesthetics.

I can remember being so sad after that game.

For me it was the beginning of the losing feeling that was true of all Boston sports teams, not Celtics.

Makes recent history even sweeter.

Thanks Keith Lincoln! RIP

He was absolutely electric.

That game was before my time. I have read a lot about it.

They also had Lance Alworth who was unstoppable too. That was quite a team.

Bobby finally came up three years later.

The next summer was the Impossible Dream.

So, we had lots of amazing thrills right around the corner.

But maybe the second worst loss of the decade for us was the finale at Shea in '66. We lost both the AFL title and a trip to Super Bowl I.

I was thinking about that game when remembering Keith Lincoln. The Namath hangover.

That was so horrible to watch. Could be #1.
