Game Day Thread Week 14: Titans @ Patriots Game Thread.

Cam Newton just hurt himself in the Panthers/Giants game. I think he only got stepped on and is just shaken up, but might be an ankle issue or something.

Game Day Thread Week 14: Titans @ Patriots Game Thread.

It's more that there are different rules that apply to fumbles and muffs. The Patriots never fumbled the ball, only muffed it, so the rules that apply to fumbles would not have applied. You are not allowed to intentionally muff the ball forward (it's called illegal batting), but none of the...

Game Day Thread Week 14: Titans @ Patriots Game Thread.

It's called a muff if you cause a loose ball to move while attempting to recover it. You're not allowed to intentionally muff or bat the ball forward to advance it, and you're not allowed to advance the ball by fumbling, but I think it might be legal to unintentionally advance the ball with a muff.

If Goodhell is such a marketing genius, how could he screw up the Pro Bowl so bad?

Roger Goodell is terrible and I can't wait until he's gone, but even I will stop short of saying he screwed up the Pro Bowl. It was always kind of meaningless and terrible.

Pats 3rd most injured team (after Giants, Ravens)

That was the most balanced and multifaceted team the Patriots have ever had, in spite of the injuries. They could win in a defensive standoff one week, run the ball up the other team's throat the next week, and dominate a shootout the week after that.

Thank GOD we didn't Tie Up WoodHead & Vereen a Year Before they left!!

I don't even have anything to add to this, but I am quoting it because it's worth reading twice.

lol@Oakland, didn't have back up LS

Actually that's how they used to get starting long snappers. Long snappers used to be centers who learned to long snap. But other than blocking, the skills don't translate super great. The mechanics of a long snap are very different from even a shotgun snap, and long snappers are generally...

lol@Oakland, didn't have back up LS

fwiw, at the NFL level, the backup long snapper is very rarely an offensive lineman. The backup long snapper is usually at a position like tight end or linebacker: big enough to block, flexible enough to perform a proper long snap motion, fast enough to get upfield on punt coverage, strong...

lol@Oakland, didn't have back up LS

As did Doug Flutie. High school teams frequently don't have dedicated kickers, punters, and long snappers, so it's not unusual for NFL players to have (limited) experience with specialized special teams roles.

lol@Oakland, didn't have back up LS

It was early enough in the fourth quarter that it was probably a +EV calculation about how big a drop in conversion rate you have with a backup long snapper. A 10% drop in extra point conversion rate makes the relative expected value of a two point conversion attempt look really good. If it had...

lol@Oakland, didn't have back up LS

Does nobody remember that the exact same thing happened to the exact same team like two or three years ago? The Raiders lost their long snapper early in the season a few years ago, and they had a backup long snapper (a tight end I think), and he was so terrible because of lack of game experience...

Brady in the 2015 MVP Race

Are you sure? I think Manning and McNair got co-MVPs in the year the Patriots beat the Titans and Colts in the postseason.

Game Day Thread OFFICIAL: Patriots at Texans Game Thread

I know this game is realistically over, but why didn't the Texans go for it on fourth down? Surely it's better to at least try.

Didn't he use all three challenges or something?

That didn't look very intentional to me. He was trying to make a pass to a receiver and just dropped it.

Thank God for the fourth down try and the stop there, I don't think I could have taken another touchdown off of a fumbled punt and a bad call that prevented what should have been a turnover back to the Patriots.

lol the announcers were completely fooled on that one.

Sobering to think that if just one of Gronkowski, Edelman, or Lewis was healthy it probably would have made the difference in this game.

Ahhhh this is basically game over. That's too bad, incredible that it wasn't game over until now.
