We could restructure Williams and Davis. We could extend Onwenu.

But, for now, the effective cap space is under $30M per overthecap (their $38M less $9M for Byard's contract).

Good thread. As an aside we have 34 people signed next year and a projected 73M in cap space.

If we did want to make more we could let Morgan Moses walk and save 9M, Let Landry walk and save 14,5M or Let Davis walk and save 16.5M among other moves. Landry probably is an auto cut. The point being we will have pretty good cash next year so we could probably push some there. But keep in mind this does not count the expected extensions of Gonzo and Boutte.

Let's not cut good players without replacements already staring us in the face.

I am not saying we cut everyone. But I think the plan was always to cut Landry year 3. As for Moses I'd pay him his 10M for sure given his play. But he might retire. As for Davis... depends on if we draft someone who comes on strong. I only brought them up cause i thought their spots were the ones with the highest likelihood to be cut/retired/traded/whatever. But that is only right now. And just my opinion. It could change.

Yeah, Landry, Moses and Davis only have one more year left on their deals with real guaranteed money. I always thought the best policy was to draft or find those older guy's replacements, then make a tough decision after training camp. You might be able to trade them to a needy team and get something in return. Often it's better to have the old guy start the season and have a stud waiting in the wings... an abundance of riches.

The big savings now could come in restructuring big ticket items like Onwenu. By my count we have 73 players under contract or hold the rights of a few as RFA's, that's roughly 17 under the 90 they will bring to camp. 11 draft picks not including UDFA's and whatever value vets they add by then.

They're in really good financial shape... mainly because Drake Maye is already a stud and he's cheap.

This makes sense as the overthecap number is actually $42,176,235, as of 93 seconds ago...

Overthecap's $42M does not include Byard's contract which is $9M. Subtract that and you are at $33M.
==========
Overthecap also has an Effective CAP Space that adjusted for # of players signed and the cost of the rookie draft class.

Add in Spillane. Not sure he's an ideal every down LB and they can save $10M if they cut him next year.

We'll have more clarity after the draft and of course after the season, but I would anticipate that Landry, Spillane and Moses are all cut next year. I also think they'll let Onwenu walk rather than extend him into his 30s as well as Henry. I think a big part of the draft strategy this year will be to have a replacement ready for Moses at RT and potentially someone ready to step in at RG for Onwenu next year (or LG and AVT slides over). I'm sure they'll want to add a LB to the mix too because they need depth now and ideally someone to help take on a bigger role if they let Spillane go after the year. Same thing with a TE to fill in for Henry too. I think if the draft board allows they'd love to have a lot of those players replaced one year early so they can feel good about moving on next year and putting the money towards younger FAs.

If they do end up taking a CB highly this year who's ready to play I could see Davis cut, but his level of play and age curve makes it not super necessary. Landry seems like he might be kind of toast. Spillane's play tailed off and he's kind of old for a "thumper" LB. Moses is ancient and level of play isn't GREAT anymore. Davis played at a high level this year and isn't at an age of obvious decline so might make sense to just let him play out the third year.

Wouldn't surprise me if after all the cuts they go into next year pushing $100M in cap space. They'll have actual holes to fill with that cap space though.

I got an authentic Vrabel jersey on clearance last year. I’d worry if it were the Pats’ Pro Shop….

I'm guessing just inventory reduction.

I don't see why it is tough choice whether to keep experienced players with guaranteed money for the last year of their contracts. The hard decisions come before next off-season.

It would be malfeasance to trade Moses and have a rookie start, but yes he might retire. I'm all for drafting a CB, but expecting him to start with no backup other than Dial and Woods is just plain silly.

If you're going to account for the draft you might as well account for the 20 million that it takes to go from the draft to season's end.

It's only a tough decision if the Patriots do an extraordinary job in the draft and rookie players are too good to deny.

But again, I'm here advocating for holding these vets until it's painfully obvious they not only have their replacements, but the backups on the bench look good also and a roster crunch makes it difficult to hold onto all of them.

It also might not be the rookie that starts, Marcus Bryant might be amazing in camp, preseason and the tackle they drafted in the hopes of one day replacing Moses might also look good. In which case, to a decent team who needs some tackle help Moses might be a trade worthy asset. It happens...

I could pitch in maybe ten dollars if it would help.

OK , for YOU the $20M is as known as the NFL rookie allocation. Or maybe you don't the rookies will be signed.

My point was that it was silly to quote a cap number in March that included draft cap allocations, without mentioning the draft cap allocations.

The 20 million (estimate), as I mentioned, is the cap expenditures from the draft to season's end, which includes the draft, 51 to 53, practice squad, bonuses, IR and replacements, etc.

Overthecap currently has us at 7th most capspace

Even subtracting the $9M unaccounted, and assuming no other teams has similar uncounted deals, only drops us to 12th most

Doesn't seem we are in a bad place cap wise.
