I'm far from an expert on tackling technique, so I'm not going to cheer or boo this change specifically. But for some context, I've heard they're trying to ban this in rugby leagues as well, and if those guys are against it, I have a hard time claiming it's in any way related to "toughness". I know that's the go to reaction to any rule like this, but if there's going to be an issue with this rule, it's going to be because it's hard to define and enforce, not that it's some move towards not "real" football.

Gronk with these rules would have been even more of a monster lol

And people wanna pass on a quarterback, just another thing to make it harder to play defense.

Good luck winning games 17-13 when you tackle a guy and it "looks" like a hip drop tackle and it's a free 15.

They pretty much had to do something after the avalanche of high ankle sprains players got last year from this. But, there has to be a limit to how far the rules should go to protect players. Like Brady said, players should learn to protect themselves and avoid injuries instead of NFL try to legislate all injuries out of the game. NFL is going to turn into the NBA soon at this pace where defense is basically not permitted

HORRENDOUS news. Defenses did a decent job last season and the points across the league dropped a few points. So immediately the "league" FURTHER tilts the rules in the offenses favor. Since the ONLY object of the defense is to bring the ball carrier to the ground, how do they manage to do that???

You can't hit him high near the helmet. You cannot hit him too hard without getting an unnecessary roughness call. Now EVERY time you wrap a guy up with your arms, what do you do? Do you simply ASK the ball carrier to go to his knee's Does the league want to make it so you cannot tackle anyone with your arms for fear it might be interpreted as 'hip drop'.

Last year's Miami 70 point outburst will no longer be a once in a century anomaly, but a weekly event. Worse yet you put in a rule that seems to be totally subjective making the official/s job infinitely more difficult AND given all the gambling that is now done with the NFL's implied consent, you open up the entire league to fix accusations in every game. ALL in the name of "player safety", What hypocrisy!

Now the only way to bring a guy down would seem to be chopping at the knees by lowering your head and driving through them. What could go wrong with THAT!?

So defenders can't go low. Can't go high..

What are they supposed to do?

At some point, you have to accept that there is a risk to playing professional sports. I like offense. But I don't want teams winning games consistently because of this rule.

so let me get this straight...defender gets a guy in the hip area...his options are a. let go of the ball carrier and b. let go of the ball carrier....am I missing something?

Glad it's banned. It was cheap. It's similar to a horse collar. Young players need to watch tape of the generations before them on how to tackle.

1 step closer to 2-hand touch or flag football

they better make this reviewable because man the ref ball that is gonna come from this is gonna be bad. imagine getting a 3rd down stop and a ref flagging it for this wrongly.

At this point one must look at all NFL rules changes that rely on very murky definitions, such as this one, as an opportunity for the league to exert bias.

F Don Shula and his legacy of self serving BS imposed on the league by this “special fraternity” known as the Competition Committee. Why nobody ever questions this is beyond belief. Why do certain teams get representation and not all teams. They have been an instrument of double standards since that jutting jawed ****stain took command of it 50 years ago. Nobody with a current association with any team should be on such a committee. It should be staffed by former coaches and football professionals only. Someone like Saban would be perfect (not BB since he has a kid working for the Pats). Why Bendover Bob never seems to try to get representation on it tells you for the umpteenth time what his actual agenda is - a HOF jacket and profits, winning and the fans not so much.

Last few years , especially in college, you see guys go high, then try flip them over. Especially on the perimeters, the tackling has become atrocious. No one follows through, it’s clutch and flip. Soon dbs will all have black belts …

apparently this happened on average once a game last season and only 15 people missed time because of it.

I feel like we're going to see flags for it every other play.

League keeps insuring that refs have too much say in the outcome of the game. I see many horrible calls interpreting this rule. Dirty, cheap tackles suck, but the refs calling **** on a whim sucks more.
