Breer: How the wheels came off the Pats dynasty

Tom helped keep the dynasty together, because guys like playing with a great QB. Especially one who takes a hometown discount contract for many years, to give his team more flexibility to sign other needs. Tom deserves a lot of credit for that. All that said, Tom is 43 and I think both he and Bill knew that playing a big share of his games is sub-freezing whether was no longer desirable and Tom has been able to prolong his career a bit by going to Tampa. Tom is a smart guy and knew the supporting cast was going to be thin, as well. If Tampa can play some serviceable defense, that offense is steamrollin' now with AB getting his reps. It's a perfect scenario for Tom and Bill just needs to do the needful and rebuild.
Yeah.

The Patriots window is shut now. It might not start to reopen for at least a couple of seasons. Brady wouldn't have been set up for success here. He's in a much better situation where he can go out on top. A disgruntled Brady here last year was not much fun to watch, I was very vocal about that months ago but I still wish it could have ended without him leaving. Now I hope whoever is next is set up to succeed and there's lots of work to do to get there.

brought to you by the Brady underwear brigade

somebody get back to me when there's a longer dynasty

given there's a salary cap, a couple of down years will happen.....and no, you can't rebuild around a 40-something QB

Post draft analysis after two yrs is something every team does. I bet in two yrs we will long for some other stud picked in the 3rd round by some team instead of say dugger or wino. This is nothing new or uncommon .
I feel just bagging on harry is an an easy target. They have hit on players like white, harris, vereen, michel, dugger, wino, uche. The WR position has been a miss combined with bad luck. Malcom mitchell was great but couldnt be healthy. Gordon was good until he relapsed. AB was an idiot but you cant deny they tried.
They didn't "hit" on either Uncle Dugg or Uche.

Richards is a classic example. His father coached football a the high school level, jordan was a team captain at stanford. those two things out weighed his lack of physical talent in bbs eyes. BB viewed him as a leader
Yep, a classic example of why Bill sucks at drafting now.

Bill is an arrogant guy who “outsmarts” the process.

An example is Glass IR Dowling. Great character, compelling physical attributes. Problem for most level headed NFL execs was his inability to stay uninjuried. Fact was his last complete season was as a sophomore—in high school.

Second-rounder, Bill? Yeah, you’re smart. And arrogant.

be fair... you won't find a head coach in the nfl who isnt arrogant

True enough. But put a rein on it.

Uche, not yet......Dugger, I think they did
Needs to show more than hiding as the 3rd S guarding 4th or 5th options on teams. No big hits, no forced fumbles, no INT's, and rarely tackles behind the LOS. Only has one pass breakup. He needs to do more than just tackle a guy.

Here's a team that hit on a pick: Jeremey Chinn with 117 tackles, five QB hits, five pass breakups, two tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries for touchdowns, and one sack. Dugger had no business being taken over him or Winfield Jr.

amen brother! Going from d2 to the nfl is a humongous transition.

d2 coaching and facilities are usually substandard compared to d1 and downright terrible when compared to the sec.

Physically Duggar was not ready to play and add in the virus messing up everything and it was a disaster pick by bb.

we burned a contract year on a guy that everybody knew was not helping much in 2020, when we knew we desperately needed help in 2020 in the front seven and offensive skill positions!

arrogance or short sightedness!

QBs like Brady are once in a generation. Wheels came off the minute BB and Kraft decided to not do everything to keep him and keep him happy.
Its very simple. All the other mistakes are big nothing burgers compared to letting Tom walk.

I expect with Brady in the middle of a playoff run with a dominant offense leaving the Pats in the dust and completely exposing GM Bill’s roster and draft decisions in recent years as um... not ideal, the days of wasting time with the Dowlings and Harry’s of the draft might be coming to an end. Hope so.

The mistake wasn’t so much letting Tom walk out the door, he wanted out anyway. It was doing that and not being ready for what came next. Deteriorating and aging roster and no QB. Rebuilding won’t be easy.

This article basically says -and I’ve heard others say it too - that the rebuild doesn’t begin this season...it begins NEXT season.

Gonna be a rough ride ahead.
Yes but how many losing seasons will the Kraft tolerate from BB? I think 3 losing seasons and he's gone.

Boston Fans and media will want his next season.

I am fine if they are losing seasons that are building for the future. If we keep signing bridge guys with no long term plan so we can try and win 9 games instead of 6 that's when I would say blow it all up.
