RIP Gil Santos, THE voice of Boston sports in my youth and the true voice of Patriots Nation. Loved that man, he and Gino both legends. Gil Santos, Bob Wilson, Curt Gowdy/Ned Martin, Johnny Most...man we had some incredible play by play guys in Boston for a lot of years.
The list is incomplete without Fred Cusick

I’m not one to usually go overboard on the goodbyes to celebrities or people I’ve never met, but this one hits a little harder. Some good memories in my teens of the early dynasty teams and watching highlights with his calls. R.I.P.

Terrible news. A voice making calls of plays that will live in our memories forever. I actually got to know him slightly over the last year. I was talking to him not knowing who he was and that voice was just playing with my head. When I put 2 and 2 together he seemed pleased that I was impressed by his work. It was nice to hear his take on the past weeks games. He was a very nice guy and will now be missed even more by me.

Thanks for the memories Gil. You were as much a part of the experience for me as the action on the field. Sad news indeed.

R.I.P. Great, comforting voice. I remember listening to him as a poor kid. In some strange way, for me, he shined a light in a harshened unforgiving world.

Please. Nothing I said disrespected Gil.

I did not imply that it did, by 'due respect' I meant respect for you and your opinion. My apologies for anything you may have misconstrued. My thought was simply that a discussion on announcers overall should take place elsewhere. It would be a good subject for a separate thread.

Thats fine. You and several others threw out a list that was missing Fred.

Santos is on the Mt Rushmore of Boston Sports Broadcasters and IMO so is Fred. Thats it.

I went to SB36, so I missed his call live. Caught it once I got home. I remember being so excited for him to finally get to make that call. What a thrill for him.

Goodspeed Gil Santos.

Me and my father were both at SB36 too. He recorded the rebroadcast on a tape and played it in his car everytime we had a long drive. The sly smile my father had on his face as he was queueing it up everytime was priceless. One smirk said ready to go back to the best moment ever.

Still can remember his voice saying; Plunkett to Vataha; Grogan to Morgan: and then the call "it's good, it's good" in SB 36. Great voice for football and a great Patriots fan.

Some people just can't be replaced.

Gil Santos

Bob Wilson

Ken Coleman

Johnny Most

That's it. That's the List.

Suprised that Fred Cusick's not on the list.

mike gorman?

Or Curt Gowdy....

The list is incomplete without Fred Cusick
Sorry, I really didn't mean to start a debate at the expense of Gil's memory; I just wanted to create my version of a Mt Rushmore of One Sport/One (Radio) Voice. If I wanted to create one of one sport-Two voices, then Fred Cusick would Absolutely be there. To be frank however, I really don't remember listening to Fred broadcast the Bs on radio (just before my time of self-awareness), only on tv - which I realize is a medium requiring a somewhat different PBP approach, especially for hockey.

Mike Gorman (from Dorchestah! and Boston Latin!) would also Absolutely be on my Mt Rushmore of one sport-two voices, though I don't believe he ever worked Cs games on radio, since Johnny Most was still High Above Courtside when Gorman started doing Cs tv on the old SportsChannel.

Curt Gowdy, same as Fred Cusick on radio, was just a wee bit before my time (received my First Communion during the spring of the Impossible Dream), so I can't in good faith place him ahead of Coleman. For that reason I would also probably place Ned Martin as the 2nd voice, though his tv work with Bob Montgomery tarnished his legacy a little.

Gil Santos, among Pats broadcasters, stands alone in his greatness, though I will defer to some of our longer-standing (iow: older) Patriots fans (Joker, RayClay, PatsFanKen, PatsFan1960, ActualPatsFan, et al) for their opinions on any worthy pre-Geno broadcasters to perhaps join him on the Double-Rushmore.
