Butler and Langi Seem To Be Among Our Top 53 Players

It would seem that Butler and Langi are among our top 53 players. I expect to see lots of movement from the patriots between now and Game 2.

IMHO, Carr, Lucien, and the UDFA defensive backs are not in that situation.

DJ Foster is ahead of Carr, and Lucien IMHO, and is a fringe candidate to the 53, especially with JE out since Foster can play WR.

Still have the feeling Lewis will be traded before season starts.

I agree that Langi and Butler (the BIG Butler!) are on the team or very close. Guy might be the odd man out if Big Butler sticks. Langi's chances went way up when BB dumped Ealy, even though Langi isn't a true DE. Slightly surprised BB couldn't get any trade value for Ealy. But many coaches must see it as a kiss of death for a player if BB can't salvage your career.

Guy is not going anywhere.

Going with 4 decent wrs's a bit of a gamble. If someone gets injured oh boy.

The PS is made for players like Lucien, Carr, Foster and whoever else we might sign from other teams. I'd rather carry an additional special teamer into Game 1 and Game 2 than use the roster spot for any of these players. Of course, Belichick might find a late veteran cut, or even trade for a WR if Mitchell isn't ready.

I could see us starting the season with 3 active WR's. That's plenty, given our TE's and RB's.

I shouldn't be so bummed out... it's football... but I hate the new giant...

...hole in the roster.

Langi's odds were already quite good, considering he got a signing bonus superior to any FA draft hopeful. I'm more surprised by Butler. NOT after the solid effort in camp, but rather that when signed, I saw him as a camp fodder/shadow roster type. He's in & he plays.

Hard to imagine anyone coming in and learning the playbook well enough to produce, at least for the first half of the season prior to the bye.

We'd almost certainly use one of the guys that have been practicing within the system. If Mitchell isn't ready to go, things are going to get dicey.

Fortunately we have excellent pass catching RB's, White & Lewis which may fill part of that gap..

Even if Lucien, Carr, and Foster were all added to the opening day roster, we'd still only have 4 decent WRs.

WRs aren't the only potentially productive pass-catchers.

Agreed. These are the final two UDFA contestants on who wants to be a Patriot. Carr could sneak in as a third but he'd probably make the PS.

Langi will either be pure ST or inactive for most of the season.

I do think that Butler will be a gameday active & get some playing time as a situational interior pass rusher & some DE snaps to spell Guy. Valentine seems more of a pure backup to Branch/Brown while Butler has some standalone gameday value.

Valentine averaged about 18 snaps per game to Brown's 33 in 2016. His role seemed to me to be "relief man" and occasional interior pass-rusher. With the addition of Butler and Guy, I'd expect his snap count to be reduced in 2017 to backup level, and he may even be inactive a few games while Butler and Guy are active for most games.

Langi seemed to be getting a lot of ST work and embracing it wholeheartedly. He seems likely to me to be Grissom's replacement.

However, I think the odds that Carr gets claimed off waivers are fairly high. If the Pats want to hang onto him, I think they'll need to keep him through cutdowns and (perhaps) try to sneak him through to the PS later.

I think it'll depend on the team they are facing.

If the team is a bit more rugged and runs the ball, that might be more VV.

With that said VV has some limited ability to create pressure.

Vinny had a nice rookie season . Hopefully he can do more

Langi is a ball of hate. Love that kid

I'm wondering if a preseason trade might involve a DT; there are five that seem to be up for regular playing time.

I'm not convinced that particular competition is at its end yet. Langi and Butler definitely have the inside track, but I see at least 4 more UDFAs with a shot. In descending order of odds:

1. Cole Croston. He's the only player on the roster with true OG/OT versatility, and has shown well at both positions.
2. Kenny Moore. The more he keeps showing up on ST as well as on defense, the better his chances grow.
3. Austin Carr. A smart, sure-handed slot receiver...and, you know, Edelman and all.
4. Damarius Travis. I swear I see him outplaying safeties supposedly above him on the depth chart.

One or even two of these + Langi and Butler wouldn't surprise me. Jacob Hollister just misses the list.

Given Garcia's failure to practice, Croston wouldn't be a surprise.
