It's a unique situation, and JG isn't likely to agree to a deal where he is the backup past 2018, or so we think.
If he has an ounce of self respect, he won't agree to a deal that keeps him as a backup last 2017, not 2018.

I truly understand this, but if the offers aren't fair, you also have to weigh what you might receive for him in the future. If you believed that Brisset was capable of being a top 12-14 starter in this league, you take less (and by that I mean, 2 #1s) to trade JG this year rather than receive a second rounder in the future.

Makes sense. I don't think BB thinks Brissett is ready to take this team where BB thinks it can go (The SB)

Just imagine, JG will sign for $24m if he's franchised, but if he's then traded, there is no reason for him to redo that contract. I'd take the $24m if I were him, because even if I have a Tyrod Taylor like middling year, I can still sign for $15m afterward.

Depends on how the new team structures the deal. Lets look at similar situation. IIRC Cassel's franchise # was $14.7m. Once he was flipped to KC, he received a 5/$63m w $28m guaranteed and he hauled in $41m in years 1-3. Clearly that is better than $14.7m.

I tend to think Jimmy's new team would offer more guaranteed $ than $24m.

This is going to severely reduce his trade value next year. Assuming the Patriots are even willing to franchise him, a team is going to need $24m in cap space to make that trade.

I'm not convinced of that for the sheer reason there will be more than 1 team wanting Jimmy. Its a given every year there are several teams looking for a franchise QB. I don't think 2018 will be no different.

On a related note, I think Ryan Hannable is onto something here...

Why are Patriots so reluctant to trade Jimmy Garoppolo? Maybe he really will succeed Tom Brady

The Patriots have to know Garoppolo’s thinking, especially considering Brady and Garoppolo share the same agent in Don Yee.

Now more than ever, a scenario really can be seen where Garoppolo follows Brady in New England.

Even Garoppolo’s long-time quarterback coach Jeff Christensen believes there are benefits to him to re-signing with the Patriots when he is an unrestricted free agent, opposed to signing with a team where he knows he will be able to play right away.

“Could I see a huge benefit staying in New England? Absolutely, hell yes,” Christensen said to WEEI.com last week. “They are one of the top franchises in all of sports right now. Yeah, absolutely, there could be a huge, huge benefit in that. No matter what happens, when you change addresses you have to rebuild confidence and trust with people. Sometimes that takes a lot of work. He’s already spent four years of his life building all that confidence and trust. Why re-invent the wheel?”

Of course he wants to play, but I think he now has matured at age 25 to the point of where he understands that he is in a really, really privileged position as far as knowledge,” Christensen said. “I think he understands now how in this league knowledge is really a huge weapon. He’s had the perfect situation for three years. His play shows it. I think the whole thing — Cinderella is a nice story and if you ever had to draw the perfect situation for a kid, this would be it and now this kid has become a man and now it has shown.”

While of course Garoppolo wants to play, he may recognize just how good of a situation he’s in with the Patriots. His chance to play also may not be as far away as some may think
.

Garoppolo must have expressed interest in staying with the team long-term. Otherwise, if he wanted to leave and wasnt willing to wait, he'd be long gone

I agree with this. If I'm Jimmy, all I want is unrestricted free agency. If someone wants to pay me $25 million to be a backup, so be it. If they want to pay me $25 million to be a starter, even better. But I would NOT sign any new deal unless that new deal contains **everything** that I wanted (i.e. truckloads of money in a city I want to be).

You hate to speculate but Jimmy deleted those tweets that caused a bit of a stir and has been quiet every since.

BB- Jimmy, whats with the twits?
JG- Nothing. When are you trading me?
BB- Do you want me to trade you?
JG- Maybe
BB- You might start here. Just need to be a little patient.
JG- Trade me.
BB- OK I'll send you to a ****-ass organization and you'll need to start all over. OR you can wait another year here and see how it all plays out.
JG- OK.

So let's say JG is sticking around as the heir apparent

When is there, if at all, a market for Brissett? Watching these QB's being drafted, and seems like he's at the very least comparable....

Still shocking that he's still here. Bill must be afraid that tommy might decline. I hope brady does the unthinkable and beats father time. I think he will be fine this year which makes me wonder what will happen
after next season.

Who said anything about stats? It's about the rings and being acclaimed as the absolute GOAT while retiring young, pain and injury free, and with a record that probably no other QB would ever be able to match. Plus the guy clearly likes spending time with his family. It's a decent theory.

No its not. Rings and being considered a GOAT are nothing more than stats as well. If you think Brady is motivated by this at all then you have not been paying attention to his interviews or people around him. He just wants to play football and win.

And where does playing football and winning get you to? What is the pinnacle accomplishment of both activities?

I think the question is...is he worth more than the 91st pick?

He simply loves the sport and all the minutiae it encompasses. My point is that another Superbowl will not make him satisfied but continue playing the game will. He will not stop even if he wins the next three SBs if he feels good enough to carry on.

Cutler to San Fran would make sense.
Shanny is a QB whisperer of sorts.

Not sure Cutler seems like the kind of QB Shanahan wants. Hoyer is a better fit for his offense imho.

Cleveland and San Fran still need a QB stay tuned.

CLE needs to figure out if it can get through 2017 with Ossy and Kessler and make a play for Jimmy in 2018.

SF is a train wreck at the position but not sure they have a draft capital to entice BB

Hoyer is average at-best but at least he won't cause problems in the locker room.

Cutler is a bad seed.

He loves the sport and the competition, sure. But the competition drives him to rings. He's admitted as much multiple times throughout his career. The dude still has a chip on his shoulder and is motivated by being the GOAT. One more essentially puts the record out of range. The theory is a sound one.

Hoyer fits the style of offense better. Cutler might be more talented but if your strengths don't align with what the coach wants to do.. well you get the picture..
