Patriots sign Joey Galloway [mergedx4]

I love this pick-up. Galloway still has speed and he has never played on a team where he didn't have to be the #1 WR, let alone being #3 (Plus of course, he has never played with anyone as good as Brady). This team could be awful scary in a 5 WR set, Moss, Welker, Slater, Lewis, and Galloway! You better get to Brady within 3 seconds or he is going to pick you apart!!

These moves are designed so that the Ty Laws of the world can no longer go one on one with our 3rd WR (leaving the rest of the DBs to double Moss and Welker). This offense is gonig to be absolutely sick!

Plus the Pats still have 6 picks in the top 100 picks in the upcoming draft.

I don't see Slater as a WR though. He's strictly a STer. The Pats 4WR set should be formidable.

If you think the team will not trade away AT LEAST 2 of those 6 picks for some type of deal in 2010 or maybe a player trade this year then you're crazy

I expect 4 picks in the top 100 to remain and 2 to be given away to some other team for a player or some compensation in 2010

I dont see the team not doing deals as it usually almost does every year.

Re: Galloway to the Patriots

...and of course, Galloway was released by his previous team. Have the Pats signed a single FA who would count against comp picks?

This shouldn't matter though as we were not getting comp picks; no major free agent losses this year.

Galloway claims that he can still run 4.29 - 4.3 so, assuming he's right, the question will be quicks as opposed to speed and, obviously, health. Hopefully they'll baby that foot (and those hamstrings) of his during the offseason.

Au contray.........

The contracts signed by Evans, Gaffney, Jordon, and yes, even Lonnie Paxton, were all for enough moeny to garner the Pats at least 1 6th round and 3 7th rds comp picks next year.

Re: Pats sign Galloway

You mean he hasn't been doing that the last four years?!?

BB better give TB #12 a straight talk and shake him out of the Giselle funk. The biggest threat to our next super bowl is Giselle's little mind games. We need Tommy to keep his coolness and mojo.

I live about 65 miles below Tampa so I have seen a lot of Galloway the last fews years on local TV cuz the Bucs are always on locally. If he still has his speed, say 80% to 85% he will be a terrific compliment receiver to Moss and Welker. When I saw Tory Holt was cut I was hoping they would make him an offer but Galloway is a proven sure-handed vet. It's a solid addition to Team Patriots!

My .02

You know, it's always interesting waking up in the morning in Australia and my first initial thoughts are "I wonder what the Pats got up to last night?"

I really hope Bill Belichick lives to be 200.

lol, the inclusion of the clip at the 2:50 mark is hilarious for its relevance

You want amusement, look at the news crawl along the bottom @ 0:41... :)

Unless Belichick bombs the draft....

The FA expert WAS BELICHICK!

Great signing. This team is coming together nicely for what should be an awesome 2009 season. I can't wait.

My only concern with Galloway or any other FA WR is can they learn the Pats' complex read and react offense? Many physically talented folks have failed. I think Stallworth was one of them even though he was a contract cap casualty here.

Galloway has been around the block a few times. His ability to get a bead on what the D is going to do probably has something to do with him getting signed to this team at 37 years of age.

Re: Moss Welker Galloway, and Oh Lewis...Just Wow

With Tom Brady back at QB, and all these weapons, not to mention Baker, the Dan Graham style blocking TE, to go with Taylor, Morris and Faulk, are you kidding me with this offense?

We might see this team outdo the 2007 team in terms of offensive production.

I prefer to think more in terms of moving the chains than stats. The creative options for the new OC will be incredible. Regardless of the defense, the Pats will be able to move the ball.

So do folks think there's any benefit to using Galloway deep opposite Moss?

Sure, intermediate and deep routes. Like Randy, he has the ability to not only stretch the field on deep routes, but gain much more RAC yards than Gaffney. He's not only faster than Gaffney -- but is a better receiver in terms of getting open.

Does anyone think that might open up the offense more? Let Galloway take advantage of the coverage Moss and Welker require?
My immediate thoughts were of Fred Taylor running wild. But that's a wait and see...

Galloway is more veteran then any of those guys. There is not much he hasn't seen at this point. Stallworth has a few wires crossed up, so I dont think it was the scheme as much as it was the player. On top of this there is a new offensive coach so everyone will have to get accustomed to his coaching style.

for fans(like me) who have seen v little of galloway

If Galloway can consistently bring that kind of athleticsm to the team, it's going to be a whale of a year.:D

I haven't read all twelve pages so my apologies in advance if what I say has already been said. First of all, I really did not expect this. I've lived in the Tampa area for a while, so I have seen a lot of Bucs games since Galloway signed here. Here's a few things about Galloway:

  • Forget his age; he is still just as fast as ever
  • Excellent hands; I literally do not remember him dropping a ball
  • Below average downfield blocking; this is why I did not think he would end up becoming a Patriot. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if another WR was still brought in to camp for a look-see that is a better fit for that type of role.
  • Discount last year's stats. Yes he was injured, but he was ready to go mid-season. He worked his way in to Jon Gruden's doghouse - certainly not the first guy to do that - and never got back on the field. With Antonio Bryant having a great season, Gruden elected to go with a possession receiver (Ike Hilliard) or better blocker (Michael Clayton) opposite Bryant. It didn't make a lot of sense to go with two deep thretas; Jeff Garcia didn't have that kind of arm strength to make it work.
  • Don't be surprised if he misses some days in training camp. It seems to work out for the best in regards to hamstring and groin issues he had earlier in his career. Just remember, it worked out with Moss; hopefully it will work out with Galloway too.
  • Was still a very good punt returner as recently as a couple years ago, but I would say it is safe to say those days are behind him now.
Again, trust me on this: unless something has happened in the last couple of months, Galloway still has blazing fast speed.

And a Mea Culpa to JSn; I honestly did not think there was any chance the Pats would sign Galloway, but now that they have I can't wait to see him, Moss and Welker on the field together.
