Absent a CBA they would be an illegal restraint of trade. Just like the salary cap, restricted free agency, tagging, etc. all would be.
But the union agrees to all of it thus is it all OK.

He didn't need to agree to some buyout to be able to coach somewhere without giving up compensation. When the coach is fired the team relinquishes all rights to him by doing so. It's only when the coach quits that the team still holds rights for the remainder the time left on the contract.
What?? There is no way Belichick would or could have kept Bledsoe after 2001. It would have been a mistake of epic proportions, Bledsoe didn't want to stay, either. Trading was the only option.
Since it appears BB still had the final say on this horrible choice it's ultimately on him.
