Figured that the sole session today would be interesting. I was wrong. Minimal contact and not as interesting as the typical pads sessions.
First, shocking news. Someone snuck in and wore #6. Hanson was punting exceptionally well this afternoon. Watched 3 seperate sessions where he boomed the ball for hang time and distance consistantly. Not every punt was perfect but most were. In the last session, punting from across the 50, he dropped the ball dead inside the 5 several times in a row. The punting team had plenty of time to get there and down the ball but they didn't touch it as the ball turned over perfectly and landed dead.
Started off with wimpy quarter speed jog throughs by both the O and D. Vrable was back at OLB. Mayo lines up inside with Bruschi, he's clearly gonna be a starter at least Thursday night.
As to the QBs, Brady was not there, a plus to someone like me wanting to see the others. While each had their moment yet again none of them were impressive. I'm spoiled having watched Bledsoe and Brady debut but this crew does not inspire confidence. Maybe they need a few more weeks work.
On the 7 on 7 Stupar blew the motion play and the coaches yelled, "Get your ***** outa there" to the amusement of the crowd. Watched Pollard who is very smooth as a receiver. Gaffney dropped a beautifully thrown pass in the back of the EZ.
Isolated on Chad Jackson, no not because I get that feeling down my leg at his ripped body that many posters here get, but because of the controversy surrounding him. He did not get much action from the QBs but what he did, he did well. On one 20 yd slant out he was well covered by Richardson who made the mortal mistake of not facing the ball. Jackson turned, went up high and caught a great pass from Gutz. On another play the QB rolled right while Jackson from right split end went downfield and split the zone wide open perfectly but the QB (forget who EDIT: Reiss said Cassel) threw the ball short to Stupar, who dropped it. Kid had a really bad day.
They did some goal line stuff but despite ppads they were playing touch football. I had more contact in frat league touch football at Tufts than on the field today. Anyhow, what was interesting was several lineups with various TEs as the blocking back for the run. Obvious planing for no depth at FB and keeping 93 injury free.
Slater 'looked' good returning KOs in the limited touch environment. He played FS and covered Welker on a deep pattern from Cassel where it looked to me that Welk pushed off at the end but droped the ball. Slater is a LOCK to make the 53 and the gameday roster.
As usual one player consistently stood out. Spann had the only INT of the day (on Gutz) and later turned in a goal line sweep by Evans, thwarting the play. It's gonna be really hard to cut this guy.
