That's hard in making cuts. Even on those who play their hearts out. Has to be very hard for coaches and management!
Sometimes, players are cut that go on to have success with the teams that claim them.

Like Danny Woodhead.

I believe waiver eligible players won't clear until Wednesday. Doesn't matter what day they are released.
I read Tuesday 8/26/25 @ 4:00 pm EST.

Great points. What Vrabel's done is managing his players. We have some veterans up front in Williams, Landry, Barmore, Spillane, chassion. Vrabel's a modern day coach and understands he needs his guys to be available for the season. So guys have been together since OTA, mini camp, and training camp. I think we have a idea of who are the main guys, and guys that will be in the rotation. When we were playing for championships yes, I could say September is an extension of the pre-season. However this teams won lost 26 games the last 2 seasons. We need to use September as a spring board to stack wins.. that's when you want to catch teams.
Raiders
@ Dolphins
Steelers
Panthers

Just goes to show the depth and talent we have at CB. DJ James, Austin rounding out the depth behind Gonzo and Davis.

I think it’s allowing the vets and guys that may not get another shot anywhere else in the NFL an early chance to catch on somewhere else.
which vets?

QUESTION - if an NFL player is released today do they have to wait until Wednesday to be claimed

ANSWER:

No — they don’t have to wait until Wednesday.

Here’s how it works:
  • Waiver period: When a player is released, he goes on waivers immediately (unless he’s a vested veteran late in the season, in which case he can be a free agent right away).
  • 24-hour clock: Teams have 24 hours from the time of the transaction to submit a claim.
  • Rolling system: The waiver process is rolling based on the actual release time, not a fixed Wednesday deadline.
So if a player is cut today at, say, 4 p.m. ET, teams have until 4 p.m. ET tomorrow to put in a claim. If multiple teams claim him, the team with the highest waiver priority (based on current standings) gets him.

Correct.

And teams can claim waived players right away but the player is not actually awarded to the team until the end of the 24 hour claiming period. In waiver priority order. The cutdown day is a little different…the deadline is 4pm Eastern but the claiming period ends at noon the next day.

The waiver wire exists year-round, so unless they have a special rule at cutdown time, which AFAIK they don't, they should clear the business day after their names appear on the transaction list as waived.

In any case, Wednesday is the first day they can sign to a PS.

Baker proved why some kept saying he's just not able to mentally catch on. He was like a Keystone Cop out there. You could find a way to blame the QB, the bad pass, the DB with contact, etc... on each play. But ultimately, anytime Baker is involved it's a bad play. He falls, he bobbles it, there's odd route issues.
Webb & Jiles showed more value on PS than Baker.
Funny as hell dude Keystone Cop got me.

Can a team claim a player off waivers for the PS of do they have to go on the 53? Or clear waivers and then free agent onto the PS?

1) 4PM Tues -
a team gets down to its 55 (53 plus two IR's who can return)

2) 4PM Tues - noon WED
waiver claims are made

3) After Noon WED
A team can offer a Practice Squad spot to players from any team

@PatsWickedPissah and @patfanken we mourn the demise of the ex-Jumbo, with the strains of “Tuftonia’s Day” echoing faintly, hoping for another Mark Buben to make it from Ellis Oval onto an NFL roster.
Youngest granddaughter will be a Junior EE major at Tufts this year but at 5' 7" 120 LBS has no chance making the team.

Like Danny Woodhead.
Woodhead was on the 53 and released to go to the PS. Not the same as the first 15 released who rarely are picked up.

By the way we lost that Pierre Strong trade, he can still be effective and somewhat explosive and a tough runner

I don’t think he’s a big downgrade from Stevenson.

Wasn't Cindy Crawford about that size when she decided to try out and made that team???? *LOL*

You are bidding for players on the Practice Squad.
Frequently players go to the team they've practiced with - but not always. And teams generally bring back players they are familiar with.
There are always a few PS players who get a decent salary due to competition.
But you make an offer - you don't put in a claim. It all counts toward the cap.

That’s great, I doubt I’d even be accepted there if I had the same grades I did in 1978. I was a Chem. E., roomed with a guy on the team freshman year so got to watch Buben play his senior year and meet him a few times. The only way they could block him that year was triple teaming and diving at his knees constantly. Funny to think he could only make it one year in the NFL but he did play three years in the USFL.

I recall you were also an engineer, don’t remember what kind, but made it to the VP level in the engineering business. Must feel good to see your granddaughter embrace the profession.

A. Players claimed off waivers must go on the 53.

B. Since this also often comes up: Teams cannot "claim" players off another team's PS involuntarily, but there will be a period every week where PS players are free to voluntarily join another team's 53.
