Reason Harry was drafted over Brown Samuel revealed.

The presses are back up and rolling at the Kraft Evening Gazette.

This Sunday will showcase Bill Parcells and how he owns a 50 acre ranch for stray dogs.

First of all - this is from Albert Breer who has been known to kinda just make **** up, so take that for what it’s worth.

Second, the actual quote:

“Before that draft, Patriots scouts were high on (South Carolina’s) Deebo Samuel and (Ole Miss’s) A.J. Brown. The two came to Foxborough together on a visit and had been traveling together all week,” Breer wrote. “As such, they had a good, jovial ability to poke at each other and laugh together, and Belichick was leery that they weren’t taking the visit seriously enough.”

This is an old topic and Breer already wrote about it back in 2021. His conclusion was that BB was close with Harry’s former coach at ASU, Todd Graham, and went with his input over his scouts.

same with Mac Jones and nick saban?

Yes and no. Yes because Belichick had a knack for acquiring a bunch of players coached by his friends at the college level (Schiano/Rutgers, Meyer/Florida, Saban/Alabama are the more extreme examples of this). So I don’t doubt Saban had his ear with regards to Mac. No because Mac was the last of the clear top 5 QBs in his draft class remaining by the time they were on the clock and was the logical choice at the time. We have the benefit of hindsight now but I remember Belichick was universally praised for landing Mac without trading up to get him. In likelihood he probably didn’t care enough and wouldn’t have lost sleep over it if another team took Mac ahead of him and he had to take someone else. He had just re-signed Cam Newton the month prior so it likely would’ve been another year of that and kicking the can down the road as far as the QB search goes.

Pats needed a big outside WR that could body up DB’s and win 50/50 balls. Harry looked like that guy without the red flags of Metcalf’s injury history. Maybe some don’t remember Metcalf was a boom bust player. As noted earlier in the thread, BB’s relationship with Todd Graham and Herm Edward’s sealed the deal. With that said, Harry was still considered a shock of a pick leapfrogging Metcalf, Samuel and Brown.

Ironically, the reason Harry flamed out was he spent to much time “vibing” and didn’t have that dawg in him. Bill really never did figure out how to draft WR’s even during the good years.

Toward the end he had forgotten how to draft anyone because he only wanted players he personally liked.

But the WR achilles heel was always there. Here’s hoping Vrabes is better at it.

When Curran, I think I was him, called Harry a "water cooler guy" you knew Harry was toast... that the streak of BB drafting ****ty receivers would continue to grow

Fabricated imo. Let’s see. If I’m a reporter/columnist and have not sniffed a good Patriots scoop in awhile, what can I do to make up a good one?

“If I take Lane Johnson’s comment about the no fun Patriots and somehow mix it in with Bill Belichick’s worst draft blunder together what can I get? The fan base is still pissed off about passing on AJ, DK and Samuel. They don’t like people thinking their team is a bunch of no fun winners. Yeah, that’ll work, this fanbase is so easily riled up. Clicks galore from the sheep.”

This has always been my understanding as well. One of Belichick’s biggest flaws was listening to college coaches he was close to. Urban Meyer in particular sold him some real punks.
