Belichick remarks on Mayo's "soft" comments on Pat McAfee Show - "They're not soft"

Another country heard from….

“He has to do something, other than just delegating and stay there coaching, get the stuff back through his microphone,” said Law. “You have to be an active participant, not only coaching the team, but if need be, going into that offensive huddle on the sidelines, doing those adjustments at halftime.

“If you need to get on your defense, you know what? Get off the sidelines. ‘Hey, offensive coordinator, I need to go talk to the defense because they soft as hell.'”

Patriots legend questioning Jerod Mayo's coaching style.

6 years ago he won us a SB and he's gone now. During the span of that 6 years your list shows that there is one coach definitely better a few that are tied and a few more that are close and over 15 that are worse. I think you made my point thanks.
He’s not only coach. He was the guy who picked the groceries as well. We have the worst roster in the league and at 72 he wasn’t the guy to lead the rebuild which seems to be ongoing since Brady.

No one seems to consider that the chances regardless of wether it was Mayo or someone else that they were going to suck. Yes Bill is 72 and maybe he was slipping or maybe he just picked a few bad QBs. There was a way better chance that Bill would still have enough of a fastball left that with the right QB it would work again. Last year's draft was better than this year's so who sucks at shopping now.

Also we didn't have the worst roster in the league last year. It wasn't great but somehow the new guys screwed everything up way worse. Currently the roster is on Wolf not Bill.

That’s a load of BS. I’m no Wolf fan but you cant turn a full roster around in 1 off-season. I’ll give you that Wolf hasn’t done anything to make it better though.

Do we really want to go over Bills last 8 or so years of drafting? It’s not gonna make him look good. I don’t see anyone here arguing in favor of Wolf, but that doesn’t mean Bill should have led the rebuild at 72. What should have happened is Kraft looking outside the organization instead of going with Wolf.

Great GM’s sign capable free agents and draft studs.

We need to stop dancing around the obvious and lying to ourselves.

You’ll never get better if you can’t distinguish good players from bad.

It’s been a collaboration since 2021 when the owner announced it was a collaboration at the owners meeting. Kraft signs the checks, it’s his name on the masthead. He’s the boss.

No where did I say Wolf is a great GM. I think we should have got someone outside the organization.

Bill was the GM, every single decision that was made regarding the football team was 100% on him and nobody else. Fact not opinion.

You can't draft a stud. You can develop them so they turn out that way.

The only thing the top of the draft gives you is a better chance to get players you want but it's still on you to develop them to their ceiling.

Bill's decisions and coaching resulted in 4-13 last year. There was really no upside to continue letting him lead anything here.

The offense is better, the defense is worse (not that they were all that great last season either)

Belichick had final roster say, and the bad drafts go way beyond 2021. If you think Kraft was in the film room scouting Cole Strange, Chad Ryland, Ty Thornton, Devon Asiasi, etc.. you’re not thinking to clearly

Here's a bit from Perry (doing an ask me anything) on the "soft" thing...

Do you think Mayo has lost the room already with all of the players griping in public (Boutte being the latest?
It's interesting, Cane. I don't think so. But the team is 1-6. It's a bad situation. So Mayo's grip on the locker room is certainly worth zeroing in on.

His "soft" commentary has obviously gotten a lot of attention lately. To me, the media (Bill Belichick included) have sounded more aggrieved by the "soft" commentary than any players I've spoken to. I've given guys all kinds of opportunities, both on the record and off, to say they resent the message or that they're pissed at their coach. If anything, they've kind of... embraced it? Had linemen telling me today it lights a fire under their asses.

Bottom line, unless they play better, Mayo's messaging to his team will be viewed -- and rightfully so -- as critically flawed.
