Patriots select Houston CB Marcus Jones at No. 85:
  • 5-8, 174 pounds
  • Versatile defender and returner
  • 48 tackles, 13 PBU, 5 INT in '21
  • Senior Bowl director Jim Nagy identified him as Patriots fit: " He’s very much like Troy Brown, just more slanted [toward] defense."

Can he play outside corner?

Well they need a returner and he can replace j Jones. Guess outside cb ain't in the cards

Versatile DB with return skills and ball skills.

Love is movements. I'm always big on movements and he stands out. Quick twitch, instant acceleration and suddenness. Fluid and smooth change of direction.

Has returned kicks and played some offense. Played slot, outside, box. Outstanding vision in the open field.

His route recognition, anticipation is plus on deep stuff. He runs the route for the WR but again his instincts and anticipation are plus. In-breaking stuff is pretty good but nuanced route runners can give him trouble with intermediate routes.

At times takes uses the sideline as an extra defender.

Back pedal is low, tight to the ground and quick. Body stays compact, balanced.

Most sports are played in a 20 yard box. He's got plus short area movements and speed. Very quick and fast.

No fear run defender that comes up with bad intentions. He makes it a point and wants to set a tone. Efficient steps and wraps up.

Love his potential in zone. Much better with his eyes forward. His athleticism and speed take over. Quick processor when he can see it.

Had a 3rd on him but thought we'd wait a round later bc of his size. On the board as a 4th. Proper value. 2/3 so far.

Thank you for the profile. I greatly appreciate your efforts and willingness to share on these boards.

First pick I’m truly excited about. Think he’s going to play an important role this season.

Can he play outside corner?
Depends. Zone, off, depends on who's in front of him but yea could and has played outside. He's a lot better when the play is in front of him. Gets a little handsy when things get tight and I've seen him get a little nervous out there against bigger WR that can really run clean routes. He's got some upside there in a few years once he becomes more of a technician, if that happens. He's a dog in zone, short area, red zone. He's played plenty of snaps in the box. Tough kid, football player through and through.

I don't know much about the guy but I seriously felt that slot cb was a bigger need for us than a boundary one. We struggled EVERYTIME Jonathan Jones went down.

5'8 is a little concerning though. We haven't gone the midget route in a long time lol.

I'm just wondering about his size at DB. What do you think of his potential as a true slot receiver? Or is he best suited as a defender?

Would be a nice middle finger to the Dolphins to suddenly also sport a group of speedsters at a tiny fraction of Miami’s cost.

Speaking of which...I’m sure the primary hope is for him to be part of the group that can compete with Hill. Plus the ST value.

If he can stay healthy and translate to the league, he’s a real triple threat.
