coming soon.... (all things Mac Jones)

This is a very interesting tweet. What this makes me think is that BB asked Judge to throw the kitchen sink at Jones during the joint sessions, something Judge wouldn't do in the actual game so nothing would be put on tape.

That was where the real evaluation was made.

Was busy yesterday so not able to come on here and tell you how excited I am for Mac and this Franchise.

At the start of camp, my hope was that Newton would win the job, firstly because that would mean he was looking good, and secondly to keep the pressure off the kid.

But man, with everything we've seen and read about how much Jones has kicked on this last month and not just closed the gap but overtaken Cam in his ability to command the offense - I don't know how anyone could not want him to play straight away.

There will be some big bumps along the road, as there are with all rookie QB's, not least starting week 1 against a familiar opponent who knows us well, but I'm here for it and I'm all in. And I'll be cheering him as loudly in those games with a sub 50% completion rate and multiple INT's / fumbles, as I will when he's shredding a hapless D for 300+ yards and multiple scores.

LFG!

Both are around six foot. Both of them move decently but are not burners. 40 yard times, vertical etc - almost identical. Both of them are from the south.
Sure Mac Jones has an inch and a half on Brees but he looks smaller then then 6'2" out there.. So its really really close.. Brees for whatever reason avoided the 'statue' label - but because of the lust for fast QBs Jones got tagged with it. He can run fine.

Lol. What? Can I borrow that magic mental ruler to re-check my dong size?

Combine Measurements:

Brees: 6’ and 1/4
Mac: 6’2” and 5/8

It’s not really, really close. Mac is closer in height to Brady than Brees.

I agree, he’s certainly big enough. Both Mahomes and Rodgers measured 6’2” flat at the combine. You don’t need to be 6’4”+ to be successful.

That being said, I’d say Jones has some Brees in him as far as playing style, but also a lot of Brady in him as well. They said Jones studied Brady a lot while growing up, even the moves of his non throwing hand, and had his cleats taped up in a similar fashion as Brady. Not surprising, Brady probably inspired a whole generation of QBs.

I agree there are a lot of similarities in terms of their playing style. I also believe, however, that this notion that he is somehow too small is overblown. His height is more than adequate and I’m sure that he is already well on his way to improving his nutrition and strength, after four months as a Patriot. His physique is very similar to Brady’s coming out of Michigan. Just like Brady, he will make incremental gains every year in terms of his body.

It was a weird Curran-ism that Mac Jones is a shrimp. He's slightly taller than Mahomes and has bigger hands.

It's like people saying he's a bad athlete, his broad jump, 3 cone and vertical scores were all above average.

Ok, I have read people posting this stat on this board and also heard it on the radio today - In the last ten years, 37 QBs have been drafted in the first round and only seven went to the playoffs in their rookie season. Can we end this irrelevant stat quickly as it relates to Mac Jones? You need to look deeper at that information to see it really is an irrelevant stat.

In the last ten drafts (this past draft excluded), eight QBs were drafted with the first overall pick, five were drafted with the second overall pick, two were drafted with the third overall pick, and one was drafted fifth overall. That is 16 QBs drafted by a top five worst team from the year prior. The odds of any of those teams going to the playoffs even with a very good season veteran is relatively low. Ironically, two of the seven rookies who made it came from this group (Luck whose team tanked to get him and RGIII).

And there are just the complete bust QBs drafted in the first round like Josh Rosen, Paxton Lynch, Tim Tebow, Blaine Gabbart, Jake Locker, Johnny Manziel, EJ Manuel, Geno Smith, Christian Ponder, Marcus Mariotta, and Blake Bortles. These guys couldn't get the playoffs even as seasoned pros or got to the playoffs one year despite their limited talent. There is a chance that Mac Jones ends up in this category, but from what we have seen thus far it is highly unlikely.

And you still have the QBs who either were drafted by teams with the coach on the hotseat and one foot out the door or a first year head coach who is trying to rebuild a bad program. A lot of the QBs already mentioned fit into this category, but includes others like Daniel Jones (who is tetering on the bust category), Ryan Tannehill, Josh Allen, Justin Herbert, etc.

And of course there is Jordan Love who is in his own category, but could end up in the bust category. He was drafted specifically for the future and had zero shot at starting because he was backing up Rodgers.

I actually cannot think of any of the first round draft picks that is in the same situation as Mac Jones. Jones is on a team with a great and established coaching staff. The Patriots had a down year last year, but now looks to have a great defense, o-line, and running game. The Patriots not only has the talent around him to make the Pats a playoff team, but also take pressure off him from carrying the team week after week like a Trevor Lawerence is likely going to have to.

Not saying that the Pats will make the playoffs this year, but past history of first round draft picks is a horrible way to predict if they will not.

I think I found a good comparison QB wise for Mac Jones. I think he is a modern day Bart Starr. So many similarities. Goes by an abbreviation of his middle name (Bartlett was Bart Starr’s middle name), went to Alabama, a lot of people questioned his arm strength and athleticism. But Bart was always one of the smartest QBs, and always one of the most accurate (led the NFL in completion percentage 4 times, INT % 4 times).

I know a lot of you youngsters don’t know a thing about him, but he was a damned good QB AND a winner, won 5 championships I believe.

So far what I like is his quick release, accuracy, touch, deep ball, quick drop, ability to learn, and his teammates respect him. My biggest concern is whether he can deal with Miami's defense this early, as there's been so little time with all the offensive starters together.

Just to emphasize for the young’uns….. the Green Bay Packers have had a ridiculous run at QB over the last 30 seasons (92-21) with Favre and Rodgers….. and there’s a very reasonable argument that *neither* of these guys might be the best QB the Packers ever had.

We should be so lucky if we got Bart Starr 2.0.

My prediction for the Miami game

- Jones 19 of 27 for 220 yards - 1 TD/0 Int's
- 140 yards and 2 TD's on the ground
