Post Game Thread- Pats beat the Chiefs

Definitely worth noting. The Patriots' O frequently looked out of sorts to start the season. As time goes by it appears to be getting in better sync and becoming the potent O we are all accustomed to (we of the spoiled fan base ).

If the D can just bring it together, bring it up to a consistently 'just ok' level? From a complimentary football perspective the Patriots will again be ready to make a run at the SB (with injuries unfortunately always being the wildcard).

For anyone who says "the Patriots can't go anywhere with this D", 2011's one WW dropped pass says hi.

Worth noting that the 2011 team faced fairly mediocre offenses in the playoffs and almost blew the AFCCG and did blow the Super Bowl (with an assist from Welker). There’s no way they’d be that close to a title if they had to face high octane offenses like this year’s Pats will likely see.

Teams that can’t play D will have a tough time winning a Super Bowl probably having to play some combination of KC, New Orleans, the Rams. We’ve seen the Jaguars and Lions light up the Pats D, I don’t have much confidence that they can hold Baltimore or the Chargers let alone elite units. Can they? Sure, strange things can happen in the playoffs. But this D has so little talent and depth at key positions that winning multiple shootouts in the playoffs means the offense has to be perfect. And we’ve seen that this offense is never perfect for 60 (or even 45) minutes in the playoffs.

Can someone put a GPS on D. Allen? Is he still on this team? I would like to know his where about.

Allen is on the back of a milk carton in my refrigerator and the label says expired.

Interesting..

Every game in almost every sport, you see something you haven’t seen before. In this one, Tom Brady’s 200th regular-season victory (first quarterback ever to do that), his most memorable play from the game will be one that might be unprecedented in his career.

Third-and-goal from the Chiefs’ 4-yard line, 5:32 left in the game, Chiefs up 33-30. After watching the replay six or eight times, this sticks out: Kansas City rushes three and drops eight into coverage. Chiefs defensive coordinator Bob Sutton did something I’ve never seen before—assuming I saw what I think I saw.

Julian Edelman, double-covered, bracketed by Steven Nelson and Jordan Lucas.

Rob Gronkowski, double-covered by safeties Josh Shaw and Ron Parker.

James White, double-covered by linebackers Anthony Hitchens and Dee Ford.

• Two other receivers, Josh Gordon and Chris Hogan, singled.

I don’t recall ever seeing a defense double three men on one play, but Chiefs defensive coordinator Bob Sutton—who gets a ton of respect from the Patriots—doesn’t play by everyone else’s rules.

So Kansas City rushed three: linemen Chris Jones and Allen Bailey, and linebacker Breeland Speaks. Though Speaks almost sacked Brady, and I’ll never figure out why he didn’t follow through on what could have been a drive-stopping sack, Brady got free. (Editor’s note: Speaks had a new rule on his mind.) On the replay, you see these eight cover guys myopically taking their men out of the play. But they weren’t looking at Brady. He had to be looking over the field and thinking, This is the damndest thing I’ve ever seen: three of my guys doubled! But the upshot of that was a big patch of green between Brady around the five and the end zone, and … “I’ve got to watch it tomorrow,” Brady said around midnight, “but I got close to the goal line and figured I’d try to get in. We needed it.”

Who does this? Who devotes six men to three of the opposition? Sutton did, and it almost worked. But Brady, who has a ton of one-yard sneaks for scores, rarely runs near the goal line from any length like this one. He dove (Gisele had to be covering her eyes) and made it.

FMIA Week 6: Tom Brady’s Never Seen Anything Like Patriots-Chiefs

The points are irrelevant for this discussion.

"The points are irrelevant" might be one of the more moronic takes I've ever seen on here. That would be sig-worthy if I didn't like you more than ViperGTS. The points are never irrelevant. They directly determine whether the game is a win or a loss.

Mahomes didn't figure anything out in the second half. You had a brainfart from JMac, that blown Harmon coverage, the Brady fumble and a ST return to the goal line account for 21-24 points. That has nothing to do with Kansas figuring anything out or with schematic changes.

They simply made the plays they didn't in the first half.

Sure he did. Even if you take away the short TD because of the 97 yard return, you still need to account for 24 points in the second half. You don't have that kind of output unless you're more comfortable in the pocket and that comfort naturally comes with being able to better diagnose what NE was throwing at him pre-snap.

That said, I do love that you're defending the unit while citing that they blew coverages left and right in the second half for two scores. You should tell you all you need to know about how that unit performed in that half.

I answered this question on the first page of this thread. The defense played overall MEH. As did the offense.

This doesn't logically compute and smacks of bias. You can't excuse the defense, as you're doing, then try to deride the offense. Basically, you're faulting the offense for not playing a perfect game which is ridiculous.

  • 43 points scored.
  • 500 yards of total offense.
  • 36:09 TOP (advantage of 12:58 - nearly an entire quarter).
  • 31 first downs.
  • 7 of 13 on third down against statistically the best 3rd down defense in the league.
  • 0 punts.
And yet, it almost wasn't enough because the defense wet themselves in the second half and particularly late in the game when they were handed the keys with a lead and proceeded to get burned for a 75 yard score on the one guy that they absolutely had to pay attention to and keep contained.

I don’t agree we couldn’t stop Mahomes. There was 2 huge plays where KVN basically played out of character and tentatively. We could argue on talent there..

Then you had the 2 blown coverages. Poor job of coaching and doing much of anything to slow Hill. Nothing Mahomes did special.

I thought he looked more comfortable in the pocket because he was better able to diagnose the blitz and our disguises.

This isn’t directed at me but I think the offense and defense played pretty comparibly inconsistent. If not for the Brady fumble then the O would get the edge.

The offense scored 43 points. If that's inconsistent then I hope they're inconsistent every week. They'll need to be if the defense that showed up in the second half continues to play like that.

Defense set up a score and got also gave up 7 weak points after the KO return and that’s ignoring the short field on the fumble.

I'll excuse the TD after the kick return but they still had the ability to hold KC to a FG after the fumble and gave up 7 instead.

Can someone put a GPS on D. Allen? Is he still on this team? I would like to know his where about.

His playing time has been down the past two games - 12 snaps against Indy, 11 last night against KCY. In the first four games, Allen averaged about 25 snaps per game.

Whatever little help the OL has needed the past two games, Gronk seems to have been providing it. Meanwhile, Develin has caught 6 of 9 tgts in six games. He caught 6 of 10 for all of last season.

With Cannon potentially out for the Chicago game and Waddle facing Mack, Allen's snap counts might come up again.

One of the things I really liked from Michel last night was how often I saw him hiding behind his blockers, waiting for holes to open up or just letting the play come to him. In his first 2-3 games he was just running right into the wall.

I thought about that too. There was ONE play in the first quarter I think, a run to the left where he outran Brown and ran into a tackler but he's getting more patient by the week

yep, LeVeon Michel.

Never hurts to have smart players that know their opportunity is to improve each week....

Your lover is waiting for you to return from the raging high seas, with open arms. Go to her!

Wow.. how poetic... I had no idea when I started on this forum...

Only just seen the highlights. I am not a fan of these late night games!!

First half looked like we controlled them really well from all aspects.

Second half - 3rd Quarter we were very poor, Can’t see that happening again this year.

Defence didn’t look as sharp as they did. Brady’s fumble was a combination of poor decision making from Brady and unbelievably good coverage from the chiefs.

Gronk, Jules, Hogan, Gordon, White, Sony. All look a threat to score every single time they get the ball.

O-Line looked incredible from what I saw.

Special teams;
Gostkowski was sublime. Couldn’t of asked for better from him.

Kick offs - were ****ing horrendous. Rather just give them the 25 yards, out coverage on kicks this year doesn’t seem right.

Punting - N/a

All in all a very good win.

Will watch the full game later on today at some point
