Making him inactive would have lent finality to it though. The way he did it - players had to be thinking during the game that Belichick was going to relent. When that did not happen, it was probably even more of a distraction. Precipitating argument in the locker room before kickoff should have been avoided if possible.
THIS

If it's really that bad, the day of the game make him inactive, don't dress him, don't have him crying on tv, and have the defense know what's going on ahead of time.

Dressing him is cowardly, bad optics, caught everyone off guard, and reeks of "I'm going to act tough to make a point, but I'm going to keep him here after humiliating him just in case someone gets hurt and I need him".

That's irrelevant. He isn't there.

My point was that it doesn’t matter whether you’re a nice guy like Carroll or a stone like B.B. ..... success or lack of will control the clubhouse. Little would be made of butler if they had won. It still comes down to success and the fact that every single coaching style has run its course over time.

I don't want him fired either. But there's a whole subset of people here who think if Belichick made the decision it was 100% justified. And I'm saying, 31 other coaches in the league would not feel comfortable with their job security today if they did what Belichick did

Without knowing what happened how can you say that?

That's speculation and we have 90 pages of it.

8 SBs as a head coach. Is that enough success for you?

Of course and I get your point.

Winning carries a lot of chips and currency.

I'm nowhere close to saying BBs coaching style and organizational culture and structure is behind the times.

People were screaming for Bevell's head because he called a pass instead of a run in a Super Bowl. Imagine if Carroll lost that Super Bowl because he said Richard Sherman couldn't play because he was causing behind the scenes issues?

Maybe a coach wouldn't be fired. But they'd be having some serious talks with management in the off season and there would be a restructuring of power in the organization as far as how much notice he'd have to give the team in these types of situations. Some coaches would be fired. If Marrone benched Bouye or Ramsey in the AFCCG or Super Bowl, he might be fired.

And yeah any other coach would be hearing the media chirping about his job security. Belichick's rightfully built up a resume that defends him from that. But this is a big personal stain on him and his legacy as a coach.

Thanks Skip, awesome HAWWT TAKE.

The players don’t give a hoot about his legacy. They just saw a year of their hard work get flushed down the toilet. Bill’s problem is not with the fans - it is going to be with the players.

I think the lesson from this is obvious, if Belichick wants to be more successful he needs to learn from Mike Tomlin and not let silly things like showing up with 5 minutes left in practice get in the way of playing time.

You gotta be more like Mike.

Possibly.....no way to know

Sure there is.

1 playoff win.

That's Belichick's career without Brady. That's not a small sample size either. That's nearly 7 and half seasons.

Want me to do a comparison with Brady? We can just do the 7 worst years he's had with Brady and it's still night and day.

Yep.

“THEY HATE THEIR COACH”

I'm betting on Bill.

Strawman. There's a big difference between having no discipline and watching your team fall apart and being a power slave and sabotaging your team to make a point to a player.

There's a middle ground in there somewhere.

Stupid argument

Ok let's all the players miss flights, smoke weed, get drunk, mouth off and they can still play in the playoffs but not regular season games.

Slippery slope my friend....
It was the Super Bowl....

Yep.

“THEY HATE THEIR COACH”
If you think this will go away as easily as Milloy, you need to put down the pipe.

I'm betting on Bill.
Bill lost. Every offensive player on the team deserved to win a ring last night. Brady deserves to have 6 and be talked about next to Michael Jordan.

The defense lost it for them and they were handicapped by their coach.

The horserace already happened. Belichick came in second.

Wow, good thing he traded away his $100 million quarterback so Brady would be his quarterback.
