I ask him to take a pay cut or I would cut him. Very simple for me look at the AFC they are all mostly passing teams. I would take the money and try and sign a DE opposite of Chandler Jones. If we were in the NFC west then I would keep him at all cost, but AFC is a passing conference and the pass rushing DE is more important than a fat DT who can't get to the QB.

Id cut him. Even if they extended or restructured him he'd still eat up 4-5 mil in cap space for 2014.

And if they cut him he'd eat up $3.6 million.

Yes, yes he was.

If he was playing badly for a couple of games and then got injured, there's an excellent chance he was already hurt for those couple of games -- as the quote suggests.

A "great" way to get injured is to have some other injury first that throws off your balance or gait.

Hopefully he's willing to renegotiate that $11.6 million and I'm pretty sure he will because he seems like a team player. However he said himself he'll be back so barring a setback during rehab I don't envision him not playing in 2014.

We don't know his future until we see how he's going to come back from injury. Big DT's the size of Wilfork? An achilles injury usually means a coup de grace for their career. It is possible that he can come back, still. If he can come back at near the player he once was, restructure his contract. If not, unfortunately we would have to say goodbye to him.

A young defense needs leaders. I don't do cap estimates but if they can extend him and bring his cap cost down, then that's a no-brainer to me.

I agree completely and I think that Wilfork offers value outside of the lines which was apparent when he was seen on the sidelines in the 2nd half of the season. He needs to restructure his deal though because Belichick and Kraft would have to be high to just let him play through his current deal given he is returning from a significant injury and is 32 years old. If he is unwilling to do so we will have to cut ties, however I don’t think that will happen, I think Wilfork understands his situation and also understands the team’s situation.

Yeah I did...thanks. But we have no idea if he had a "pre-injury". But we do know....for a fact.....that he did play poorly. We also know...for a fact....that he will be 33 years old during the season next year. We also know....for a fact.....that he suffered a major injury that most people don't come back from or at the very least greatly affects their play.

It would be stupid to extend him...simply stupid.

But they' d save an additonal $8 million (minus whomever replaces him) in cap space.

Clearly, restructuring is in order. Hopefully Wilfy and the team can reach a mutually acceptable cap reducing agreed incentive laden contract that lets him finish up as a Patriot.

I'm slightly disappointed to see him seemingly reach Goodyear Blimp proportions as he's on record saying that he's concerned about weight related diabetes and heart issues that killed his Dad early. He had said that upon retirement he intended to slim down considerably. Maybe lose a Welker or so. His off season workout regimen has consisted of doing mega laps in the pool for aerobic conditioning that has enabled him to have extraordinary stamina and stay in on D for most every snap heretofore. I had thought that even with the injury he could have resumed swimming, but perhaps not. Best wishes to the Wilfork family.

Absolutely, but i would stagger the guaranteed money to make sure he is ready to play for the season. If he is on the roster at final cutdown then he gets the bulk of his guaranteed money. Give him a million to sign and the rest in August, then structure in playing time incentives as with Vollmer.

I can see this being a debatable point (it's a yes for me by the way) but there is just no logical reason for responding to this question with "no way in hell". The role Vince plays in the locker room and his intelligence and leadership on the field make the question deserve more respect than that response.

Honestly the Pats have inked worse deals than Vince Wilfork coming off injury for $4M plus incentives.

If they think he can still play for 3-4 more years of course he gets extended. It's too easy, unless he's unreasonably (because of the injury) expecting a bunch of new money to be added to the extension. I don't know what the time frame is for them knowing where he is at physically to make that kind of decision, but as Brady6 mentioned prior they'd have to be high to let him play out the current contract. Either he'll get extended, or he'll get cut.
