Does anyone see us taking a WR in round 1?

Honestly? I don't. I don't think that WR is as big a need as the issues we have on the defensive side of the ball, but a lot of the mocks I see have NE taking a WR with the #28 pick. I just think that Safety, CB, and ILB are all areas that need reinforcements before WR.

I know that BB/SP pick for value, and take their guys if their avaiable, etc., but given the fact that last year our draft was more offensive on the first day, I think we will go defense on the first day this year.

That being said, with the 24th pick, the patriots would not surprise me by taking a TE.

Not really - the only out I give myself on that is it's a pretty good group of WR so if we've gotten a good defensive guy at #24 and there's a WR we really like I could see it. But more likely we'll look for growth from Jackson in his second year, C&G in their second years with the team and take a late day one/early day two WR.

I wouldn't be shocked, last year the draft was has a very heavy focus on defense allowing offensive players like Maroney to slide to them. It may happen again this year and the WR class is very deep at the top. Players like Bowe, Meachem, Rice maybe Ginn and even a long shot of Jarrett may be there at 24. All of these players are improvements over any WRs currently on the roster.

They will have their choice off any TE, Olsen and Miller are the two highest rated but seem to be very good but not special. I don't think the 2 TE set was very productive, they seemed to switch to a 3 WR, 1 RB set down the stretch. I think Watson is an above average pass catching TE (not anywhere near great) and a below average blocker. This degates the effectiveness of a 2 TE set because it is not a true power formation. I say get a JAG (Just Another Guy) who can block and play Watson split out, similar to Dallas Clark.

I really think the only way we pick a WR #1 is if a guy like Jarrett is available at #24. Since most have Jarrett going in the top 15, I doubt we draft a WR in the first round, unless BB & Pioli love Ginn Jr or Bowe or Rice. Come to think of it, how could we not pick a receiver named Rice, though we did so in 1985. Oddly enough I see a lot of mock drafts have up picking Bowe or Rice in the first round. I remember seeing a lot of mocks last year predicting us to pick a RB, most notably Maroney,

I think the Pats should take the BPA at either the DE/OLB/ILB, S, CB or WR positions in the first round. This draft doesn't strike me as particularly deep, so if it turns out that the BPA was a WR (likely Bowe) then I could see it happening. I like WR Anthony Gonzalez a lot, but I'm not sure if he grades as a first rounder. I wouldn't complain if the Pats used their 2nd first round pick on him.

JMO but, other than CJ, all of the early WRs are overhyped. I don't want a first round WR...but if we did, the only one I'd consider would be Robert Meachum at #28.

My reaction to any WR being drafted by the Pats:

At #24 -- extremely surprised (borderline shocked)
At #28 -- very surprised
From round two on -- not surprised at all

WRs I like for the Pats (before workouts and subject to change):

Robert Meachum (Round 1-2)
Johnnie Lee Higgins (Round 2)
Anthony Gonzalez (Round 2)
Chansi Stuckey (Round 3)
Syvelle Newton (Day two)
Ryne Robinson (Day two)

Somehow do not see any O players in rounds 1 & 2, with that being said never know what these guys will do as our perception is the greatest need is D, but a lot will depend on what happens to #22, #54, Graham and TBC.. this may all change by the time of the draft. I do expect that the Pats will resolve a lot of stuff earlier this year so there will not be a replication of the #83 fiasco and they will not be caught short.

I suspect the difficulties they've had integrating CJ into the team will make them wary of spending another high pick at wideout, and that will be a need better suited to fixing through free agency.

There are plenty of mocks out there which do have us taking WR in the draft. This site, Hail Redskins, is an amazing mock database and among the picks we are handed there are Dwayne Bowe from LSU, Sidney Rice from USC and Robert Meachum from Tennessee.

I see them looking at DB and LB though.

Right now, I'm thinking we'll definitely take a wideout at #28. Two of Bowe, Meacham, Rice and Ginn will likely be available at that point and they all seem like good value at that point in the draft.

Brady had to be perfect too often this year to complete passes to his wideouts. His comments about how hard he had to work to get passes to them during the SD game was his version of throwing teammates under the bus (a la Manning and the "let's just say we had some protection issues" comment). Perhaps our WR's do not get open very easily. That is why they couldn't survive with other QB's.

I'm also very skeptical that we will take a linebacker in the first round - unless it is a very athletic tweener type. I see some of them (like Moses) slipping in a deep class into the late second and third rounds. I think we'll add some FA linebackers for depth and draft some youth in rounds 2 - 4 to develop into starters as early as 2008.

To me, that leaves DB as the likely pick at #24. I admit, though, I have a hard time visualizing Belioli doing this as well. But if we franchise Assante, we will draft the likes of Revis/Hall/Hughes/Cason at #24. I we resign Assante (and I expect us to do one or the other by draft day), we'll go for a FS like Landry/Nelson/Griffin.

We won't draft a QB, TE, RB or Olineman in the first round.

Of course, it's still January and I will change my mind at least once in February, March and April.

Yea, I have seen a lot of mocks saying the same things, which is funny, because I can see the Pats taking Meachem and Bowe before Rice (which doesnt mean much, Defense is more my specialty when it comes to the draft)

I agree, I think the focus needs to be on potential depth for offense, but the focus on defense is much more important, with potential STARTERS at key positions such as CB, S, OLB, or ILB. The first day should be focus primarily on the defensive side of the ball.
