RIP, very sad news. Not sure what to think, except that I hope that this serves as a powerful reminder that we're only just starting to understand the effect that head trauma has on NFL players, and stuff like this happens far, far too often.

Wow, he is now the 8th guy from the 94 Chargers to die before 45.

According to the latest TMZ update he apparently shot himself in the chest:

"Back in 2011, former NFL star Dave Duerson shot himself in the chest ... and explained in his suicide note that he wanted his brain donated to a research center because he believed the blows he took to the head during his football career caused him to become mentally impaired"

I don't believe it's drugs. It's probably similar to that ex Bear player who sadly took his own life last year.

Yup, this is the second former player suicide in a month I think. This one will shake some past and present Patriots to the core I imagine. So sad.

Any player who has had an incident where suicide attempt was suspected should be watched carefully by loved ones.

Depression from multiple concussions? That was my first thought. Steroid withdrawal can also cause depression but I don't think that would apply here.

Significant that he shot himself in the chest? It seems like several of the recent suicides by ex-football players have used that method. Obviously, using this method obviously "saves" the brain for further study.

One of my co-workers met him in Vegas almost a year ago and said that he was a great guy.
