Mangini: Ravens match up well vs. Pats

I don't get why everyone is all over the Ravens playoff game from 09 and ignores that the Patriots also beat the Ravens in the 09 regular season and the 2010 regular season.

Yes, the Ravens have some nice pieces to match up with the Patriots but I just don't see how they match up with everyone without putting Ray Lewis and/or Pollard in very tough situations. Neither of them are very good at coverage and if both TE's go out with two wr's and/or a back, at least one of them is going to be singled up on a player in a mismatch.

Brady. 6-1 against the Ravens.

It really doesn't matter what he or anyone says. Just have to execute on gameday. I think we will.

I'm thinking that Lewis will be forced into some ugly choices on every snap, and he's not athletic enough to enforce the right choice (by design). This is RayRay's swan-song, and it won't be pretty.
The other name you mentioned? he has a future date in hell.

When it comes right down to it, there is only 1 measurable defensive stat that means anything --- Points allowed.

The Ravens allowed 16.7 points per game. If you look at a team like Miami, who allowed 19.6 points per game and had the misfortune of having two of those games against the Patriots (who hung a total of 65 points on them).

Statistically, take out the games that included us (we unfairly influenced their defensive ranking ), and the Non Patriot-playing Dolphins defense is basically on par with Baltimore defense in points allowed (16.7 vs. 17.6).

If you remember, we had no issue hanging an average of 32 points on them.

In fact, if you look at 10 top defenses in points allowed, we played 3 of them (Pittsburgh, Miami and Philly)........ If you take out the NE games, all 3 of those teams improve statistically (2 significantly). Pitt (ranked #1) stays #1, but their PPG improves a few tenths of a point. Miami and Philly improve dramatically to 4th and 6th respectively (from 7th and 10th).

Conversely, Baltimore....... when faced with teams whose offenses are in the top 10 in points for, they only played two (SF and SD). They handled SF okay, but got schooled by SD. They average 20 PPG allowed between the to, which is significantly worse then their average of 16.6.

Bottom line...... Sure, Baltimore has a good defense, but they really haven't played very many good offenses, and when they did, they allowed more points then they normally do. When the Pats played top-10 defenses, we still average over 30 ppg. That's slightly under the 32 we average against all teams, but certainly enough to win MOST of the time.

They only match up if they can generate pressure, but they absolutely could not do that yesterday. I think people like the idea of the Ravens, but on Sunday I saw a team that got dominated on both lines of scrimmage. If Yates had been a little more patient in the closing minutes, the game was absolutely there for the taking.

Why do fans always do this?

So because pitt beat us..and they beat pitt..they will beat us..do these idiots not know every team plays every other team differently?
Yeah, the transitive property for math doesn't apply to football and it can easily be rock, paper, Gronk smash football in Endzone (what? you thought scissors. They shouldn't allow them on the football field except by the medical staff).

They probably do match up well against the Patriots. The system they have is simular to that of the Jets, who beat the Patriots last year. I think the Pats might have a few matchup problems but this year they are playing so well and are more mature than a year ago. Nobody is beating the Patriots this year.

Is he wrong? they do matchup great against us. i just hope we can overcome that.

This year the Pats have not beat a team with a winning record. They lost to both the Steelers and the Giants. The Ravens beat the Steelers twice, Texans twice, Cincy twice, the 49ers and the Titans.

He constantly says great things about the Patriots and gives this team props. Saying that the Ravens match up with the Patriots (Which they do) is not hating on the Patriots so I'm not sure why people are acting irrational over this or why people even get upset if so and so doesn't pick your team.

Cause we hate him.

Where? They've beaten the Patriots once recently.

Same here. I don't see how they matchup well against us. When we played them last year it was Gronks and AH 4th game in the league. Right now those two guys are playing on a different level...not to mention Welker is healthy once again. Also Branch had a huge game against them.

Who do they have that matches up well against those guys?

To me this game will strictly be about the NE O-line vs Balt D-line.

Mangini is in the minority on this among analysts I believe. Most understand that Ray Lewis and Pollard have no chance at covering Gronkowski and Hernandez. Ravens will have to play a lot of zone and Ravens have to put SB 42 like heat on Brady to have a chance to win. I don't see it happening because the Ravens don't have Justin Tuck to abuse Mankins with his speed. Pats can handle Suggs and Ngata.

We all know what Tom Brady does against zone coverage. You're quite right though, negate Suggs and Ngata and 3/4 of the game is won against their D.

What the Patriots must do is force the Ravens offense to become even more one dimensional. Shut down Rice and you shut down the Ravens O.

Yeah, and last year we beat every team that made it to the conference finals.

What's your point?

A big reason why is because we beat them, we beat NY Jets and Denver twice...

We beat Denver twice, if we lost those games the Bronco's would have been 10 & 7

If we lost to Chargers they would have been 9 & 7

If we lost to the Raiders they would have been 9 & 7

If we lost to the Cowboys they would have been 9 & 7

If we lost to the Jets twice they would have been 10 & 7

These teams would have all had a winning record if it was not for us.. don't tell Felger and the rest of the mediots..

I think the Rat had the Broncos beating the Pats last week too. So, as I said at that time, I'd be more worried if the Mangenius picked the Patriots.

'what ifs' are dumb......

but I will tell you that the ravens were 6-4 outside of the division, and 1-4 outside the division ON THE ROAD

in the 4 losses, their offense was pitifulin cluding 146 total yards agianst the jags, 229 total yards against the titans, 323 stat padding yards (they were down 15 near the end of the 3rd) against the seahwks, and more of the same as they got spanked by the chargers.

the ravens are a different team on the road, and any decent QB has executed at will against them away from their house. if they played the texans in texas, we'd be playing the texans.

the ravens need to be slapped down......hard

I hate Mangini the Rat as much as anyone, but as far as Mangini the ESPN analyst goes, he's the best they have down in Bristol....no question. He made some of the same comments on Mike and Mike today, and quite frankly they were very insightful.

What I like is he actually tells you stuff about what he learned as a HC and in his days as an assistant in NE. He knows, and tells us the insights on what bothers Brady and makes his job harder, He actually has the knowledge of what are the best ways to disrupt the TE bunch formations.

To his credit NOTHING of what he says isn't accurate and on point and to dismiss it just because you don't like what he did a half dozen years ago is just being spiteful. How can people just ignore what he says just because it isn't what they want to hear.

Face it guys this is going to be a very tough game against an experienced and physically tough defense, and a decent offense that is going against a very unproven D
