last night's play says it all

discuss...

Based on a pick-six off of Tavaris Jackson?

rehash,,,nothing to add...except this belongs in the PSquad section....

Asante had a pick six in 2006 against the Colts in the AFCG as I recall too. We still lost that game... because of our defense... what does that tell you?

I agree with this. Asante's 4 post-season Pick-6's is now a league record. The guy is a playmaker and would have made an impact. I agree we undervalued him.

sorry to rehash, but they play of the secondary this yr says it all

they had the money to resign him, now we have to hope that the secondary get fixed.

Bill does not value the position (at least not at $9+mil) - Does anyone think we make the playoffs with Asante? I don't. Maybe we win the Jets game at home, but that's a stretch.

You mean like the one he DROPPED in the SB that would have sealed the game? I've seen a number of Eagles games this year and he has dropper more than a few.

4 interceptions, $9.3 million for the year ($2.3 million per pick). Would you call that value?

And I believe I watched him get torched for a TD in that first Dallas game (one of the few Philly games I watched this year). He is a legitimate number 1 corner (I would not call him a great corner by any means - Law was better in his prime), but no way was he worth the money Philly paid him.

Would it be better to overpay at this position, and not the flexibility necessary at others?? This topic has been discussed ad infinitum..

Precisely. If that's what $8M buys, it's NOT worth it.

By the original poster's reasoning the Pats should just blow away their cap on Ted Washington, Adam "The Traitor" Vinitieri, Deion Branch, Asante Samuel and a litany of FAs Kraft/BB was 'too cheap' to sign. Result, we're left with a team with no viable backups to the starters when they're injured and worse yet, insufficient cap space for 22 capable starters.

*ROFLMAO* So, one play defines a whole season?

Sorry to break this to you but Samuel didn't WANT to re-sign with the Patriots.

Something you fail to comprehend is that the Pats didn't have the money to re-sign Samuel and make the other signings that they did. The Pats would have been hardpressed to sign players as injuriy replacements. And then what would they have done?

Samuel is ONE player and there were many people in Philly upset with him. Not to mention the number of disgruntled players in philly the Samuel's signing caused. McNabb, Westbrook, Shepard, Brown, Dawkins.

Ironically enough, BTW, the Patriots did ultimately offer Vinatieri more money right before he signed with the Colts. As I've said before, Gostkowski must be happy he didn't stay.

Den - No we don't undervalue him. When a player gets more opportunities to make interceptions because he's in a situation (in the play-offs) more than others at his position, that doesn't make him better.

Asante isn't much of a "play-maker". He's a gambler. More often than not, he gets beat when he gambles. And it results in bigger plays for the other team.

Asante is the one who got beat on both David Tyree catches last year. The miraculous catch that Rodney had to help out on and then the TD catch in the end zone. Asante is also the one who dropped the interception that would have ended the game... And all he could do was smile about it. WHAT? SMILE? You just F'ed up Asante. You don't SMILE. You get upset. You come back and make a play. And he didn't. He got beat.

and ad nauseam.
This is spilt milk, which also makes me nauseated.

He's not worth that kind of money to us. I'm glad we passed on him.

What is it with all these knee-jerk reactions? ANYONE could have beaten the Vikings-didn't the Giants almost beat them with their *backups* the week before?

Take away the pick 6, the Eagles still would have found a way to win.

BTW-Brad Childress blows.

Absolutely. the subject has been discussed and discussed out here.

On the one hand you can argue that Piolichick erred in not signing Asante in his pre-contract year when they could have gotten him at a reasonable price and that we lost a player who could have made a difference this year; on the other hand, you can argue that you can't argue with success and that the Pats have done pretty well with their system of not paying top dollar at every position and that everything looks clear in hindsight.

There's something to be said for both sides of the argument; those on side A are not going to convince those on side B and those on side B are not going to convince those on side A.

Let's move on.
