Why Jordan Richards is a Top 64 Pick in the Patriots' NFL

I am interested to see what BB has in mind for Richards. I am sure he will start on STs and rotate in but he would not pick him there if he thought that was all he could do.

They have used picks 27, 34, 48, 64, 91 197 on safeties currently on the roster. I think they were hoping to get more production out of that position then they have so far overall.

We have a good idea.

“Richards is a strong tackler, instinctive guy,” Belichick said. “I think he’ll be a good, certainly be able to play on the punt team, kickoff return, kickoff coverage, punt return; even be a matchup guy outside maybe or a holdup guy in the box. I’m sure he’ll be able to contribute in the kicking game.”

If we want to discuss the safety position, we might discuss which of our safeties will be cut to make a place for Richards. It seems most unlikely that we will keep 6 safeties. Some are arguing for 4 safeties and 6 corners, which would require cutting two safeties.

Anyway who knows what Richards will do, as others have said..pretend he was drafted in the 4th and Tre Jackson was taken in the 2nd.

We don't have the luxury of seeing the Pats' draft board. It could be that they had 8 OGs left on the board that they liked equally well and, therefore, could be confident in getting one of them later. Could be that Richards was the last high-grade DB on their board and they knew, if they didn't take him, there wouldn't be options later.

It's always been clear that Belichick is more concerned with getting his guys in the draft than he is with which round he takes them. I don't think he cares about the round.

I don't see Dax Swanson and Nate Ebner as being locks to make the 53 man roster.

I think we fans may be a little behind the times thinking of a hard distinction between safeties and CBs. The reality is that we have 5 DB base defenses and 6 DB sub packages. The 5th and 6th DBs could be listed as CBs or Safeties and it may differ from week to week depending on the matchups.

You need quality depth at both positions. Your best matchup against a TE in the slot might be an extra safety. Best matchup against a Welker-like slot receiver might be an extra CB.

It's more having enough players with different skill sets than it is what you call them.

Thats why the Wells pick is really interesting.

The dream is that he is a cover LB in SS clothing....or SS in LBs clothing.

Here are a few quotes and my commentary on an article from February 2015. Belichick must have read the same article on his Super Bowl yacht.

No wonder Richards was projected later in the draft: "While other prospects left school to train full time... at pricey athletic academies in Southern California, Phoenix or South Florida, Richards trains while maintaining a full class schedule."

And because he attends Stanford and stayed in college during the draft, he was questioned if he would quit for a cushy day job if things got hard.

But he already has it harder than most college players. He studies at the gym, something Belichick must have loved. "On some days... he might bring his textbooks to the gym and pump out a few chapters between sessions."

He's humble and does not quit at anything. His worst GPA was actually in his first semester at Stanford. "In high school, you were one of the smartest kids. And at Stanford, you’re pretty much the dumbest kid", he said.

And he must have started in high school, since he got into Stanford in the first place.

In high school, he never left the field, as safety and running back. His dad was the coach of the high school freshman team. He was captain of the winning Div II title team.

In college, he never missed a game for four years, and became a starter as a sophomore when he was called Coach Richards by his teammates.

By senior year, Richards could play both safety positions, the nickel and dime defensive back spots and even was the team’s “disaster” cornerback.

“If we were on the road and had injuries at cornerback, we could plug him in there,” Stanford secondary coach Akina said.

He was so confident in his abilities that he stayed in college to finish his degree. In turn, the Patriots clearly targeted him in round two.

Stanford is not just a football college, and provides a world-famous education. As a student athlete, he took 100% advantage of both sides of the university.

Now that he's on the Patriots, we can expect him to take 100% advantage of the opportunities in Foxboro.

Cool and all but are they building an academic honor society or a football team....

Call them what you want. IMHO, we need EIGHT defensive backs, plus backups who might be special teams specialists.

ALMOST ROSTER LOCKS (7)
CB: Fletcher, Butler, Arrington
S: McCourty, Chung, Harmon, Richards
=================
backup corner (pick 1): Dennard, Ryan, McClain, Roberts
==================================
DB/ST (pick 2): Dennard, Ryan, McClain, Roberts, Swanson, Wilson, Ebner, Chekwa, Green
==================================
Obviously, Fletcher and/or Butler could be beaten our for their starting positions. However, I think that both will still make the roster in any event.

From most of what I've read about this guy, I'm expecting another James Sanders experience.

For a 4th round pick, James Sanders had a pretty good run with the team and a good career in general.

Richards is a bigger hitter. We'll see what happens.

I don't think the QB we drafted this week is the only one who will play a different position or multiple positions, if they make the team.

“I’d like football to continue but I’m definitely thinking non-football post-graduate plans, and so I plan on when football’s over — whether it’s this year or a couple of years from now — going back to school and getting my master’s in education,” he said in November 2014.

Maybe Belichick is curious what it would be like to have someone known for learning quickly and provide the player a graduate-level education in everything he knows? We will find out.

I would be quite happy if Richards turns out to be another James Sanders, or a Chung.

Ya think? :)

5 picks in the top 91 selections is more dedication to draft resources that any other position on the entire team, and yes---that includes the fact that we have three LBs taken at #8, #25, and #52.

I actually loved the Wells pick, a freakish athlete who could wind up being a large, speedy cover safety.

I hated the Richards pick. Huge reach. Love the person, seems like a really intelligent, mature young man who someday will be a leader in industry or academics. Just a great young man who is very likable. That being said, outside his mental make up and personality, physically and production wise, is he a 2nd round talent ? No way. The kid looks like he would ace ANY job interview due to his smarts, personality and genuine disposition, looks like he probably aced his interview with Belichick. Not sold on if he can be a good football player and worth a 2nd round pick. I look at the great talent available after he was picked and cringe.
